HP ENVY 4520 AIO Printer Review
Last week, we featured the HP Envy 5540 which was announced back in early September with several other printers. Now we shift our focus to another one of the new units, the ENVY 4520. The ENVY 4520, like the ENVY 5540, is 3-in-1 (print, scan, copy) unit with dimensions of 17.53" x 22.22" x 5.04" (W x D x H) when printing , and weighs roughly 12 lbs. Print speeds on the unit top out at 9.5 ISO ppm for black and up to 6.8 ISO ppm for color pages. Included in the middle of the printer is a 2.2” monochrome touchscreen LCD which allows easy navigation of machine menus and functions.
Like the ENVY 5540, the ENVY 4520 is meant to bring convenience to wireless printing. As such, the users will certainly appreciate is the self-deploying paper tray that automatically expands when printing, and contracts when not in use, ensuring when you come to retrieve print jobs, you are not picking up pages up off the floor. It features easy wireless setup on a home or local network, and supports Wi-Fi Direct connectivity meaning that users can make a direct connection between applicable mobile devices and the printer, without needing to rely on a router or access point acting as an intermediary. True mobile printing is also supported as the ENVy 4520 works seamlessly with many smartphones and tablets with Android, iOS, Blackberry, Windows 8, Windows RT, and Windows 10 Mobile operating systems. Another key feature for users to take advantage of is the HP Printer Control app which can be downloaded onto iOS, Android, and Windows devices. With the app, users can opt to scan files directly from the printer to mobile devices quickly and easily or start a print job. As with most HP wireless printers, the ENVY 4520 works Apple AirPrint and HP ePrint among others.
Paper handling on the device is about what you would expect for a sub-$100 printer. Maximum capacity is 100 sheets at a time or up to 10 envelopes. Automatic two-sided printing is also a standard feature on the ENVY 4250. The maximum monthly duty cycle is 1,000 pages, though the recommended volume is between 100-400 pages.
The ink system on the ENVY 4520, like many of the lower-priced HP units, consists of two cartridges, with one black and one tri-color (cyan, magenta, and yellow combined). Both the black and the tri-color ink cartridges are available in both a standard and high-yield type, so users can match up their ink to their printing needs. The standard yield black is rated for up to 190 pages and the tricolor for 165 pages. The high-yield XL cartridges provide up to 480 black pages, and 330 color pages.
The HP ENVY 4520 AIO is available from the company for $99.99. For more information on the unit, visit the product page on the HP website.
