Thermal Printer Paper - Everything you could ever want to know

Quick answer: Thermal paper is coated with a heat-sensitive chemical layer that turns black wherever a thermal printhead heats it, so no ink, toner or ribbon is needed. It's the paper behind store receipts, credit-card slips and shipping labels. It's fast and cheap to print on, but the image fades with heat, light and time, and the coating makes most thermal paper hard to recycle.

How Does Thermal Paper Work?

The coating contains a colorless dye and a developer, most commonly bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), or a phenol-free alternative. When the tiny heating elements in a thermal printhead warm a spot to roughly 60–80 °C, the dye and developer melt together and react, turning that spot dark. The printer simply switches those heating elements on and off as the paper feeds past.

What Type of Paper Do You Use With a Thermal Printer?

A direct thermal printer only works with thermal-coated paper or labels. Ordinary copy paper won't show anything. Match the paper to your printer's width and core size. The most common sizes are:

• 3⅛" (80 mm) rolls: standard POS receipt printers.
• 2¼" (57 mm) rolls: credit-card terminals and mobile receipt printers.
• 4" × 6" labels: shipping labels for USPS, UPS and FedEx on Rollo, Zebra and similar printers.
• 2" (58 mm) mini rolls: pocket photo and sticker printers.

How Can I Tell If Paper Is Thermal?

Scratch the shiny side quickly with a fingernail. Thermal paper shows a dark gray or black mark from the friction heat, and ordinary paper shows nothing. The coated (printable) side is usually the slightly glossier one, facing the outside of the roll.

What Are the Downsides of Thermal Paper?

• Fading. Heat, sunlight, plastic sleeves, hand lotion and alcohol all speed it up. Standard receipts can become unreadable within months in a hot car.
• BPA and BPS exposure. The developer can transfer to skin with handling. Phenol-free papers avoid this.
• Recycling. Many recyclers reject BPA/BPS-coated receipts because the chemicals contaminate recycled paper. Put them in the trash unless the paper is labeled phenol-free and your local program accepts it.
• Black only on standard papers. Some specialty papers print red and black.

How Long Does Thermal Paper Last?

Stored cool, dark and dry, standard thermal paper holds a readable image for roughly five to seven years, and "long-life" or top-coated grades are rated longer. For receipts you need to keep for taxes or warranties, scan or photograph them. Store blank rolls sealed at room temperature away from sunlight.

Can Thermal Printers Print on Any Paper?

Direct thermal printers can't. Thermal transfer printers can print on plain paper and synthetic labels, but only with a ribbon installed. And an inkjet or laser printer can't use thermal paper effectively: the heat of a laser fuser darkens the whole sheet.
