What Is a Toner Cartridge?

A toner cartridge is the replaceable part of a laser printer that holds toner, a very fine powder. The printer uses a laser, a drum and a heated fuser to bond that powder onto the paper, which produces sharp, smudge-proof text. Each laser printer takes a specific cartridge number, and the printer reads the cartridge's chip to confirm it fits.

Ink vs. Toner: What's the Difference?

Inkjet printers spray liquid ink through tiny nozzles and suit photos and light home printing. Laser printers fuse powdered toner with heat and suit fast, high-volume document printing. Toner doesn't dry out the way liquid ink can, so a laser printer that sits unused for weeks still prints cleanly.

OEM, Compatible and Remanufactured Toner

Will Compatible Toner Damage My Printer or Void the Warranty?

A correctly made compatible cartridge in the right printer won't damage it. In the U.S., the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act stops a manufacturer from voiding your warranty just because you used third-party toner. It would have to show that the cartridge itself caused the damage.

How Long Does a Toner Cartridge Last?

A standard cartridge typically prints 1,000 to 3,000 pages, and high-yield versions often print 3,000 to 10,000 or more. Page yields are measured at about 5% coverage, so pages with heavy graphics use toner faster. See how long toner cartridges last.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the right toner for my printer?

Check the cartridge number on the label of your current toner (for example TN760, 58A or 057H), or the model number on the front of the printer. Then search above or use the printer table on this page.

Do I need a toner cartridge or a drum unit?

Read the message on the printer. "Replace Toner" or "Toner Low" means the toner cartridge. "Replace Drum" or "Drum End Soon" means the drum unit. Brother lasers use a separate drum that lasts through several toner cartridges, while most HP and Canon cartridges have the drum built in. See drum unit vs. toner cartridge.

Why does my printer still say "Replace Toner" after I install a new cartridge?

Why is my laser printer printing streaks or faded pages?
