About Fax Ribbons & Thermal Transfer Film

Plain-paper fax machines from the late 1990s and 2000s print with a roll of thermal-transfer film, not toner or ink. Heat from the print head melts a black coating from the film onto the page, so every page uses the same length of film whatever it says. When the roll runs out the machine prints blank or faint pages and asks for a new "ribbon" or "print cartridge".

Brother sells the film two ways: a PC-x01 cartridge (a plastic frame with one roll already loaded) and a PC-x02RF pack of two bare refill rolls that drop into the frame you already own. The refill is cheaper per page, so most owners buy one cartridge and then refills. Panasonic KX-FA and Sharp FO/UX film is sold as bare rolls that load into the holder inside the machine.

How do I know which fax ribbon my machine takes?

Find your model number on the front or top of the machine and match it in the compatible-model list on each product page. Brother IntelliFAX 560/580MC use PC-401, FAX-575 uses PC-501, IntelliFAX 750/770/870MC use PC-301, IntelliFAX 1170/1270/1570MC use PC-201, and IntelliFAX 1250/1350M/1450MC use PC-101.

What is the difference between a cartridge and refill rolls?

The cartridge is a reusable frame with a roll installed. Refill rolls are the bare film only; you keep the frame and swap the roll. Refills cost less per page.

Is fax film the same as toner?

No. It is often called fax toner in searches, but these machines use thermal-transfer film. Laser fax machines (for example the Brother IntelliFAX 2800 or Panasonic KX-FL series) use real toner cartridges, which you will find in our toner collection.

Why are my fax pages blank after installing new film?

The film is usually loaded backwards or has slack. The coated (dull) side must face the paper, and the take-up gear should be turned until the film is tight with no wrinkles before closing the cover.
