• HP 60 (older DeskJet D2500/F4200-type printers): looks similar but does not fit; see HP 60XL.
• HP 62, 63, 64, 65 and 67 are different cartridges for different printers: HP 62XL, HP 63XL, HP 64XL, HP 65XL, HP 67XL.
• Regional versions: HP cartridges are region-coded. The same printers sold in Western Europe use HP 301, which will not work in a North American printer, and HP 61 will not work in a European one.
• MICR: for check printing, use the HP 61XL Black MICR instead.

Chips, Printer Messages & Installation

Dynamic security: HP firmware updates can block cartridges that carry a non-HP chip. These cartridges are rebuilt from genuine HP cartridges and keep the original HP chip. To be safe, turn off automatic firmware updates in the printer or HP Smart app before installing. If you see a "used cartridge" or "non-genuine" notice, select OK or Continue.

Installing: open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to stop. Press down on the old cartridge to release it and pull it out. Pull the plastic tape off the new cartridge by its tab without touching the copper contacts or nozzles, slide it into its slot until it clicks, close the door and print the alignment page if prompted.

"Cartridge problem" or not recognized: remove the cartridge, check all the tape is off, wipe the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth and reseat it. For streaks, run the printhead cleaning from the printer menu or HP Smart; the printhead is built into the cartridge.

Has the HP 61 black ink cartridge been discontinued?

HP replaced the original 61XL black (CH563WN) with a new part, C0PA4AN, rated at about 360 pages. HP 61 printers are still fully supported, and we still sell remanufactured CH563WN cartridges rated at about 430 pages.

Is there a difference between HP 61 and HP 61XL?

Both fit the same printers and install the same way. The XL (high-yield) version holds more ink, so it prints more pages and costs less per page.

How many pages does the HP 61XL black print?

About 430 pages at roughly 5% coverage (ISO/IEC 24711), compared with about 360 for HP's newer C0PA4AN.

Why is HP 61 ink so hard to find?

HP changed the HP 61 part numbers (C0PA4AN, C0PA5AN, C0PA6AN) and dropped the separate high-yield tri-color, so many stores no longer stock the original CH563WN and CH564WN. We keep remanufactured versions of both in stock.

Is it worth buying HP XL ink cartridges?
