Chips, Printer Messages & Installation

Installing: open the front door and the drum access door, pull the old imaging drum out by its handle, and remove the shipping material from the new drum without touching the green drum surface. Slide it in until it seats and close the doors.

Messages: the printer may show a non-HP supply notice; confirm it to continue. If the drum is not recognized, reseat it firmly and check that all tape and covers are removed.

Drum vs. toner: this is the imaging drum only. HP 823A toner cartridges are separate and are replaced more often.

No. The imaging drum and the HP 823A toner cartridge are separate parts.

When should I replace the drum?

When the printer shows a drum near-end-of-life message, or if you see repeating spots or streaks that a new toner cartridge does not fix.

No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer can't void your printer warranty just because you used a third-party or remanufactured supply. If a non-original supply directly caused damage, that specific repair might not be covered.
