How the CastleScore works
An independent 0–100 rating for every printer we cover — blended from six weighted pillars, refreshed every month, and kept deliberately transparent.

The CastleScore is a single number, from 0 to 100, that tells you how good a printer really is for the money — accounting for the thing most reviews gloss over: what it actually costs to keep running.
We built it because Castle Ink has sold the ink and toner for these machines for years, so we know which printers are cheap to feed and which ones quietly drain your wallet after you buy them. Every score combines what real owners say, what independent labs measure, and our own cost-per-page data — then a human editor signs off before it's published. Scores are recalculated monthly, so a printer's rating moves as sentiment, pricing, and new models change.
The six pillars
Each printer is scored 0–100 on six pillars. Those pillar scores are combined using category-specific weights (below) into the final CastleScore. Percentages shown are the inkjet weights; laser weights differ slightly.
1 · Owner Sentiment
Verified-purchase ratings aggregated across Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Staples, Target and manufacturer sites, plus qualitative signal from Reddit and printer forums. Weighted for review volume, recency, and long-term (6-month-plus) ownership, so a printer that owners still like a year later beats one that only impresses on day one.
2 · Expert Consensus
Scored, hands-on reviews from independent labs — RTINGS, Consumer Reports, PCMag, Wirecutter, Tom's Guide and TechRadar. When professional testing and owner sentiment disagree sharply, we flag it and dig into why before publishing.
3 · True Cost to Run
The pillar no pure-review site can calculate as well as we can. We compute real cost-per-page from actual OEM and compatible cartridge/toner pricing, page yield, and ink efficiency — including tank and subscription models — using Castle Ink's own catalog. A cheap printer that's expensive to feed scores low here on purpose.
4 · Reliability & Longevity
How likely it is to keep working. We mine the review corpus for recurring failure signals — paper jams, printhead clogs, Wi-Fi drops, firmware lockouts — and factor in rated duty cycle and warranty terms. This is separated from raw sentiment so a well-liked printer that jams constantly can't hide behind its star rating.
5 · Features & Usability
Whether it does what you need, easily: print speed, connectivity, automatic duplex, scan/copy/fax and document feeders, mobile-app quality, paper handling, and how painful setup is.
6 · Value for Money
A composite that rewards printers punching above their street price — the consistent tie-breaker between two otherwise similar machines.
Category-adjusted weighting
Inkjet and laser buyers optimize for different things, so the same six pillars carry slightly different weights in each category.

How the number is calculated
Each pillar is normalized to a 0–100 sub-score (star ratings, expert scores, and cost-per-page are all mapped onto the same scale, with cost-per-page measured against the category's range so the cheapest-to-run printer earns 100). The sub-scores are multiplied by their weights and summed:

= 25.8 + 15.8 + 23.0 + 11.4 + 10.8 + 4.7 → CastleScore 92 (Castle Elite)
Finally, a human editor reviews any printer whose owner sentiment and expert consensus diverge beyond a set threshold, or whose score moved sharply since last month, before it's published.
Score tiers & badges
Printers scoring below 60 aren't included in the published Top 10s.

We use only publicly available review data and our own first-party pricing. Purchased or fabricated reviews never enter the model — the credibility of the score is the whole point.
Transparency & independence
● AI-assisted, human-verified
Reading thousands of reviews across dozens of printers every month is only possible with AI, so we use it to aggregate and summarize sentiment, surface recurring complaints, and normalize inputs. But AI doesn't get the final word — our editors validate every published ranking. AI makes us more thorough; people make the call.
● How we make money
Castle Ink earns affiliate commissions when you buy a printer through our links, and we sell the compatible ink and toner cartridges for the printers we rank. We state this plainly because owning the conflict is more honest than hiding it — and neither affiliate deals nor our cartridge business influences a printer's score or where it places.
● Editorial independence
Scores are set by the methodology on this page and by our editors — never by advertisers or sponsors. If we ever partner with a brand to present the CastleScore, that sponsorship buys visibility, never rank, and it's always disclosed.
