Installing: open the front cover and lift out the drum and toner assembly. Press the lever to release the empty toner from the drum, rock the new toner gently and remove its packing, then click it into the drum and reinstall the assembly.

Toner vs. drum: this is the toner only. The Dell 1720 imaging drum (310-8710) is replaced separately, usually after several toner cartridges, when the printer asks for it or prints become spotty.

Streaks or faint print: rock the toner again and clean the drum's corona wire by sliding its tab back and forth a few times.
