Brother Drum Unit Buying Guide

How do I know it's the drum and not the toner?

Drum problems tend to repeat at the same spot on every page (a dot, line or smudge every few inches), or show up as a gray background or faded areas that stay after you put in fresh toner. Toner problems usually look like pages that fade evenly as the cartridge runs low. If a new toner doesn't fix it, replace the drum.

Our Brother drums are compatible units, newly manufactured to fit and perform like the original, not used drums. They drop into the same slot, accept the same toner cartridges, and are rated for the same page life.

Brother Drum Unit FAQs

Do I need a new drum every time I change the toner?

No. A Brother drum outlasts several toner cartridges. For example, a DR630 drum is rated for about 12,000 pages, while a standard TN660 toner prints about 2,600, so you'll go through roughly four toners per drum. Replace the drum when the printer shows Replace Drum or Drum End Soon, or when prints show repeating marks or streaks that a new toner doesn't fix.

What's the difference between a Brother drum unit and a toner cartridge?

The toner cartridge holds the powder that forms the image. The drum is the light-sensitive cylinder that transfers that toner to the paper. In most Brother lasers the toner clicks into the drum, and the two are replaced on different schedules.

Do I have to reset the drum counter after installing a new drum?

Usually, yes. Most Brother printers keep counting pages on the old drum until you reset it, so the Replace Drum message stays on. The reset steps differ by model and are in the printer's menu or user guide.

Will a compatible drum void my Brother warranty?

No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, Brother cannot void your printer warranty just because you used a third-party drum or toner.

Which drum does my Brother printer use?

Check the number on your current drum's label, or match your printer in the finder table above. The HL-L2300 series uses the DR630, the HL-L2350/L2370/L2390 series uses the DR730, and the color HL-L3210/L3230/L3270 series uses the DR223CL.
