Don't mix these up: the Brother Workhorse models (HL-L5215DW, HL-L6415DW/DWT, HL-EX415DW, MFC-L5715DW, MFC-L6915DW, MFC-EX915DW) use the DR925 drum, not the DR920, even though they take the same TN920-series toner.

Installation & Printer Messages

Remove the new drum from its bag and take off the orange protective cover. Move your toner cartridge from the old drum into the new one until it clicks, then slide the assembly back into the printer.

After installing a new drum, reset the drum counter from the printer menu (look for Machine Info or Parts Life, then Reset Drum). Installing new toner does not clear a "Replace Drum" message. In March 2025 Brother publicly stated that its firmware updates do not block third-party supplies; if a non-genuine notice appears, choose OK or Continue.

How long does the Brother DR920 last?

Brother rates the DR920 at about 45,000 pages when printing one page per job, and up to about 75,000 pages at three pages per job. The drum usually outlasts several toner cartridges.

Is the DR920 the same as the DR925?

No. The Workhorse models (HL-L5215DW, HL-L6415DW/DWT, HL-EX415DW, MFC-L5715DW, MFC-L6915DW, MFC-EX915DW) use the DR925 drum. They take the same TN920-series toner, but the drums are not interchangeable.

Do I need a new drum when I replace the toner?

No. The toner and drum are separate. Replace the drum only when the printer shows "Replace Drum" or prints show repeating marks or streaks that a new toner doesn't fix.

Will this void my printer warranty?

No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer can't void your printer warranty just because you used a third-party supply. If a non-original part directly caused damage, that specific repair might not be covered.
