Chips, Printer Messages & Installation
Ribbon, not toner: despite the "fax toner" name people search for, these machines print with a thermal transfer ribbon (film), not powder toner.
Installation: Open the machine's cover and lift out the old cartridge. Unpack the new one, set it in place with the gears on the side shown in your manual, then turn the gear until the ribbon is tight with no slack or wrinkles before you close the cover. A loose or creased ribbon can cause blank or streaked pages.
Compatible (Newly Manufactured) vs. Original
Original (OEM) PC-201 cartridges are new from Brother and cost the most. Compatible cartridges, like this one, are newly manufactured by a third party to fit and print like the original at a lower price.
