HP 148A and 148X Toner at a Glance

Consumable Part Number Page Yield Type
Black Toner HP 148A (W1480A) ~2,900 pages Standard
Black Toner (high yield) HP 148X (W1480X) ~9,500 pages High yield

The HP 148A (W1480A) also fits the LaserJet Pro 4001n and 4001dw and the MFP 4101fdn and 4101fdw, plus their HP+ versions (4001ne, 4001dne, 4001dwe, MFP 4101fdne and 4101fdwe). The high-yield HP 148X (W1480X, ~9,500 pages) fits the same printers. Both have the imaging drum built in.

How to Replace the Toner

  1. With the printer on, press the button on the right side to release the front door.
  2. Lift the used cartridge by its center handle and slide it out along its tracks.
  3. Unbox the new cartridge, rock it gently 5–6 times to distribute toner, and remove the protective seal.
  4. Slide the new HP 148A cartridge in until it clicks into place.
  5. Close the cover. The printer will recognize the new cartridge automatically.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Non-HP chip" or cartridge warning: The 4001dn uses HP's dynamic security, which checks the chip on every cartridge. Power-cycle the printer and reseat the cartridge first. Do not update the firmware to fix it: a firmware update is what usually makes this printer start rejecting cartridges with non-HP chips. If you use compatible toner, keep automatic firmware updates turned off.

Faded or streaky prints: Gently rock the toner cartridge side-to-side to redistribute toner, then reinstall. Run the printer built-in cleaning page from the maintenance menu to clear fuser residue.

Print quality declining over time: Because the drum is integrated, replacing the toner cartridge installs a fresh drum at the same time — no separate drum service required.

Paper jams or smudges: Inspect the paper path and pickup roller for wear. Replacing worn rollers and keeping the printer dust-free prevents repeated print-quality issues.

What LaserJet Pro 4001dn owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support forum and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Does the 4001dn have Wi-Fi?

No. It connects by Gigabit Ethernet or USB 2.0 only. If you need wireless, the 4001dw is the Wi-Fi version, and it takes the same toner.

Which cartridges does HP list for it besides the 148A?

HP lists the high-yield 148X (W1480X, about 9,500 pages) and a W1020XC high-yield contract cartridge (about 10,000 pages), alongside the 148A at about 2,900 pages.

I have a 4001dne. Can I use compatible toner in it?

Not if HP+ is active. The 4001ne, 4001dne and 4001dwe are HP+ models, and once HP+ is turned on they accept only Original HP toner. The plain 4001dn is not an HP+ printer.

The LaserJet Pro 4002 looks the same. Does it take the same toner?

No. The 4002 and MFP 4102 take HP 149, not HP 148. Some reviews of the 4001dn even list HP 149X by mistake, so check the number on your old cartridge before you order.

LaserJet Pro 4001dn quirks worth knowing

  • The plain 4001dn is not an HP+ printer, but HP still labels it Dynamic security enabled and says it is meant to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip.
  • The same 148A cartridge goes into 15 HP models, including the HP+ versions (4001ne, 4001dne, 4001dwe, MFP 4101fdne and 4101fdwe). Same cartridge, different rules: the HP+ versions take only Original HP toner once HP+ is activated.
  • It is built for an office. HP rates it for up to 80,000 pages a month (750 to 4,000 recommended) and it takes an optional 550-sheet Tray 3 on top of the 100-sheet multipurpose tray and 250-sheet Tray 2.
  • The multipurpose tray takes media up to 120 g/m², so heavy card stock is out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What toner does the HP LaserJet Pro 4001dn use?
A: The HP LaserJet Pro 4001dn uses the HP 148A (W1480A) black toner cartridge.

Q: Does the HP LaserJet Pro 4001dn have a separate drum unit?
A: No — the drum is built into the HP 148A cartridge, so replacing the toner refreshes the drum at the same time.

Q: Can I use compatible HP 148A cartridges?
A: Yes, with a caveat. HP says the 4001dn is intended to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip. Our compatible 148A and 148X carry their own chips, and a dynamic-security printer can still reject a cartridge like that after an HP firmware update, so automatic firmware updates are best left off.

Q: How do I reset the toner counter?
A: HP printers detect new cartridges automatically via chip — no manual reset is needed.

Q: Where can I buy HP 148A toner?
A: We sell compatible HP 148A with chip and compatible HP 148X with chip. U.S. orders over $50 ship free, and orders placed by 4 PM ET ship the same day.
