What Ink Does the HP Envy 5070 Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The HP Envy 5070 uses HP 65 ink in the US and Canada: one HP 65 Black and one HP 65 Tri-Color. The high-yield HP 65XL cartridges fit the same slots and are rated at about 300 pages each, against about 120 (black) and 100 (tri-color) for the standard size.
HP has folded HP 63 and HP 65 into a single HP 63/65 line, and new genuine boxes now carry that label; HP says they work in every printer that took HP 65. The look-alike HP 67 does not fit. Castle Ink sells remanufactured HP 65XL Black, HP 65XL Tri-Color and a black-and-color combo pack.

What Does Envy 5070 Ink Cost per Page?
On October 30, 2026, 4inkjets listed HP's 65XL Black and 65XL Tri-Color at $53.99 each, about 18¢ a page, with the standard HP 65 Black ($32.99, about 27.5¢ a page) backordered. Staples, which now lists the older HP 65XL as discontinued, had the new HP 63/65XL Black at $46.99 (about 15.7¢ a page) and the HP 63/65 Tri-Color at $26.99 (about 27¢ a page). Our remanufactured HP 65XL Black is $18.99 (about 6.3¢ a page) and HP 65XL Tri-Color is $19.99 (about 6.7¢ a page), or $32.99 for the combo (about 5.5¢ a page across both).
Will Remanufactured Ink Work?
Usually, yes. The Envy 5070 is not an HP+ printer, so it is not locked to Original HP ink by subscription. HP says its close sibling, the Envy 5055, uses dynamic security to block cartridges with modified or non-HP circuitry, and we assume the 5070 behaves the same way. Remanufactured HP 65XL cartridges are built from original HP shells, cleaned, refilled and tested. The printer may show a "used or non-HP cartridge" notice; acknowledge it and printing continues. To lower the risk of a firmware change, turn off automatic updates in HP Smart, and if a cartridge is ever rejected, our 1-year guarantee covers a replacement or refund.
How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP Envy 5070?
- Turn the printer on. The carriage only moves into the access position while the printer is powered.
- Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to stop and the printer to go quiet.
- Press down gently on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it toward you and out of its slot.
- Unpack the new cartridge and pull off the plastic tape by its tab. Do not touch the copper contacts or the ink nozzles.
- Slide the cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle until it clicks. Tri-Color goes on the left, Black on the right.
- Close the door. If an alignment page prints, follow the prompts on the display or in HP Smart.
These are the standard steps for this type of printer. If your model's door label shows a different order, follow the label.
Which Other Printers Use HP 65 and 65XL?
In the US, HP 65 fits the rest of the Envy 5000 family, including the Envy 5010, 5012, 5014, 5020, 5030, 5034, 5052, 5055 and 5058, along with the DeskJet 2622, 2652, 2655, 3720, 3752, 3755 and 3772 and the HP AMP 100 series. Our Envy 5055 guide covers the 5070's closest sibling. Outside North America, the same printers take HP 304 instead.
What Envy 5070 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer and its Envy 5000-series siblings on retailer pages, HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.
The store only has "HP 63/65" now. Will it fit?
Yes. HP merged HP 63 and HP 65 into one HP 63/65 line in July 2026 and says the new cartridges work in every printer that took HP 65, with no settings change. Staples lists the HP 63/65XL Black and HP 63/65 Tri-Color for the Envy 5070. There is no XL tri-color in the new line, so the 300-page HP 65XL Tri-Color is still the larger color option while stock lasts.
Should I buy HP 65 or HP 65XL?
Both fit. The XL cartridges hold about two and a half times as much ink (300 pages against 100 to 120) and cost much less per page, so they are the better buy unless the printer sits idle for months, when ink can dry out.
Why does it say "Cartridge Problem" with a new cartridge?
Usually a strip of tape is still on the contacts or the copper contacts are dirty. Remove the cartridge, wipe the contacts on the cartridge and in the carriage with a dry lint-free cloth, and reseat it until it clicks. If the message keeps coming back with several cartridges, HP staff on its forum treat it as a likely hardware fault.
Can it keep printing if one cartridge runs out?
Yes. Like the rest of the Envy 5000 family, it switches to single-cartridge mode and prints with the remaining cartridge, at lower quality and speed.
Envy 5070 quirks worth knowing
- HP's product number for the Envy 5070 is Z4A57A. We found no current HP store listing for it, and HP marks its Envy 5055 sibling discontinued.
- Spec listings disagree on its feature set: Icecat's data lists a 35-page document feeder and eBay's catalog lists fax, the same contradiction HP's own Envy 5055 page shows. Check your unit's lid before relying on either.
- Instant Ink cartridges carry their own part numbers and stop working when the subscription ends; retail HP 65 or 63/65 cartridges are not tied to a subscription.
- HP rates it for up to 1,000 pages a month, with 100 to 400 recommended, at about 10 pages a minute in black and 7 in color.
