Compatible vs OEM HP Ink (2026): Is Remanufactured HP Ink Worth It?
Last Updated:Last updated: October 28, 2026.
Quick answer: For most HP home printers, remanufactured ink is worth it. Our remanufactured HP 63XL black is $23.49 for 480 pages, about 4.9 cents a page, against $62.99 for genuine HP 63XL at the same yield, a 63% saving. HP 64XL is nearly identical (62% off), and on the OfficeJet Pro 952XL a remanufactured cartridge cuts cost per page from 3.5 cents to 1.5. The caveat that overrides everything: if your printer is an HP+ "e" model and you accepted HP+ at setup, it is locked to Original HP ink for life and no third-party cartridge will work.
HP+ warning: the DeskJet 2755e, 4155e, ENVY 6055e, OfficeJet Pro 8025e and 9015e are all HP+ eligible. HP's FAQ says HP+ "requires an HP account, Internet connection, and use of Original HP Ink for the lifetime of the printer," and HP documents no way to undo it. Decline HP+ at setup if you want the option of remanufactured ink.
We'll say the obvious thing up front: we sell these cartridges, so expect us to tell you remanufactured HP ink is a good idea. To keep ourselves honest, this post quotes HP's own warranty and firmware language, uses HP's ISO yields where they differ from ours, shows the one family (HP 67) where our saving is small, and lays out the legal record, including the cases HP settled for nothing.
What does HP actually say about third-party ink?
HP's position has three parts, and they are less hostile than the headlines suggest.
- Warranty. HP's warranty statement says use of "a refilled or non-original HP consumable" does not affect the warranty; if a failure is attributable to that cartridge, "HP will charge its standard time and materials charges" to fix it (HP warranty statement, PDF). A damage-based exclusion, not a void.
- Chips. The same document says the printer "is intended to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip," and that a reused HP chip "enables the use of reused, remanufactured, and refilled cartridges." Firmware targets clone chips, not remanufactured cartridges that keep HP's chip.
- HP+. HP's FAQ says standard printers "use dynamic security measures to block cartridges using a non-HP chip or circuitry," and HP+ printers require Original HP Ink for life (HP+ FAQ).
Printers covered: DeskJet 2755e, DeskJet 4155e, ENVY 6455e, OfficeJet Pro 8025e, OfficeJet Pro 9015e, and the older OfficeJet 3830, ENVY 4520 and ENVY Photo 7855, which predate HP+.

Prices checked October 2026 at the sellers' sites; they change often.
HP 67XL is the weak spot: our 67XL black is only $2.94 cheaper than genuine, an 8% saving; the 67XXL at 400 pages is where that family gets interesting. The big savings are on the 63XL, 64XL and 952XL, where genuine is $62 to $71 and a remanufactured cartridge with the same yield is $23 to $30. Our family guides compare LD Products, 4inkjets, Staples and Amazon brands line by line; several undercut us on the 63XL and 64XL singles. What we offer instead is same-day shipping from Greenlawn, NY on orders by 4 PM ET Monday through Friday, a 1-year return window with full refund, US phone support, chip-version disclosure, and a replace-or-refund promise on any cartridge that arrives defective.
Our pick: remanufactured HP 63XL black (and 64XL, and 952XL)
If one cartridge makes the case for remanufactured HP ink, it is the remanufactured HP 63XL black: $23.49 for 480 pages, a genuine HP shell with HP's original chip and printhead, 63% under the genuine XL. HP's replacement of the 480-page 63XL with a 300-page 63/65XL at $46.99 widens the gap in practice. The remanufactured HP 64XL black at $23.99 for 600 pages does the same for ENVY Photo owners, and the 952XL 4-pack with OEM chips at $64.95 replaces $229.96 of genuine OfficeJet Pro ink.
The honest trade-off: on HP 67XL, buy whichever is convenient, and if HP+ is activated none of this applies. Other Castle Ink HP singles: 67XXL black ($34.95), 65XL black ($18.99), 61XL black ($23.95), 910XL black, OEM chip ($26.99), 962XL black ($39.95) and 902XL black, OEM chip ($20.99).
Dynamic security, HP+ and firmware: which families are at risk
Integrated-printhead cartridges (HP 61, 63, 64, 65, 67) carry the chip and printhead on the cartridge. Remanufacturers reuse HP's chip, and HP calls such cartridges "unaffected by dynamic security" (HP support forum, quoting HP policy). The complaints here are print quality on over-recycled shells, and HP 63 "older generation cartridge" errors on post-2018 printers after HP revised the chip (Actionable Intelligence).
Ink-tank cartridges (HP 902, 910, 952, 962) need a separate chip, which is what firmware targets. Documented blocks: September 2016 on the 952 family; a February 2025 update on the OfficeJet Pro 9010/9020 series (962) (Born's Tech and Windows World); and firmware 2512B in April 2025 on the OfficeJet 8010/8020 series (910) (The Recycler). The symptom is a cartridge that works until an automatic update, then a "cartridge problem" message. That is why we sell these families in OEM-chip and new-chip versions. Choose the OEM chip and turn off automatic firmware updates before installing.
HP+ printers are a third case: with HP+ activated, the printer rejects every non-HP cartridge regardless of chip. They also include three months of Instant Ink that auto-bills unless cancelled; our Instant Ink cost comparison puts the 50-page plan at about 12 cents a page, against 4 to 5 cents for remanufactured 63XL or 64XL black.
What the law says
Magnuson-Moss. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 makes it generally illegal to condition warranty coverage on a specified brand of parts unless those parts are free or the FTC grants a waiver; the FTC restated this in April 2018 warning letters (FTC press release). HP cannot void your warranty for using remanufactured ink; it can only decline to cover a failure it attributes to the cartridge. More in does compatible ink void my warranty.
In re HP Printer Firmware Update Litigation (N.D. Cal., 2016–2019). After HP firmware began disabling third-party 952-class cartridges on September 13, 2016, five class actions were consolidated. HP settled for $1.5 million and agreed not to reactivate dynamic security on the affected OfficeJet Pro models (settlement notice).
Mobile Emergency Housing Corp. v. HP (N.D. Cal., filed 2020). Color LaserJet Pro owners alleged late-2020 firmware bricked third-party toner. HP settled in March 2025 with no payout, agreeing to keep disclosing dynamic security and let users decline firmware updates (The Register).
Robinson v. HP (N.D. Ill., filed January 2024). Eleven plaintiffs allege a late-2022 update disabled printers with non-HP cartridges while HP raised ink prices (The Register). The case is pending; there is no settlement to claim from.
Italy, AGCM decision PS11144 (December 2020). Italy's competition authority fined HP EUR 10 million over dynamic security disclosure (AGCM press release). One correction to something repeated online: there has been no FTC enforcement action against HP over dynamic security. The "FTC complaint" framing refers to consumer complaints and the 2018 warning letters.

When genuine HP ink is the right call
- Your printer is an HP+ "e" model and you accepted HP+ at setup. The only savings lever left is Instant Ink.
- You print under about 20 pages a month on an HP 67 printer; the gap on a single 67XL is under $3.
- You need HP's own print-quality guarantee for photo or client-facing output.
- The printer is under warranty and you would rather not argue attribution if a printhead fails.
When remanufactured wins
- Integrated-printhead families (HP 61, 63, 64, 65, 67XXL), where the cartridge keeps HP's chip and costs 40 to 63% less.
- High-volume 952XL, 910XL or 962XL printers, where an OEM-chip remanufactured XL halves cost per page; disable automatic firmware updates first.
- Non-HP+ printers, or "e" models where you declined HP+.
- Instant Ink households printing under 300 pages a month: 63XL or 64XL black at 4 to 5 cents a page beats 12 cents on the 50-page plan.
How to choose an HP cartridge
- Check whether your printer is HP+ (any "e" suffix) and whether HP+ was activated. If it was, compatibles will not work.
- On 952, 910, 962 and 902 printers, choose the OEM-chip version and turn off automatic firmware updates before installing.
- On HP 63 and 65 printers built after mid-2018, make sure the seller guarantees a cartridge built on the newer core.
- Compare cost per page using HP's current ISO yields; the 910XL black is now rated 720 pages, not 825.
- Prefer remanufactured over new-build clones (see compatible vs remanufactured vs OEM) and confirm the cartridge number with our HP ink compatibility chart.
HP Compatible Ink FAQs
Does using compatible ink void an HP printer warranty?
No. HP's warranty text says use of a refilled or non-original HP consumable "does not affect" the warranty; HP can only charge for a repair if it can show the failure was caused by that cartridge. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act bars conditioning coverage on a brand of supplies.
What is HP dynamic security and does it affect remanufactured cartridges?
Dynamic security is firmware that blocks cartridges "using a non-HP chip or circuitry." HP states that cartridges with a new or reused HP chip are unaffected, which covers remanufactured integrated-printhead cartridges (63, 64, 67) and OEM-chip remanufactured ink-tank cartridges (952, 910, 962).
Can I use compatible ink on an HP+ printer?
Not if HP+ was activated. HP's FAQ says HP+ requires Original HP Ink for the lifetime of the printer. If you skipped HP+ at setup, the printer behaves like a standard HP model and remanufactured ink works.
What happened in the HP firmware lawsuits?
HP paid $1.5 million in 2019 and agreed not to reactivate dynamic security on 2016-era OfficeJet Pro models. In March 2025 it settled the Mobile Emergency Housing LaserJet case with no payout but a promise to keep disclosing dynamic security and let users decline firmware updates. Robinson v. HP (2024) is still pending, Italy fined HP EUR 10 million in 2020, and there has been no FTC action against HP.

Each of these pages lists every Castle Ink cartridge in the family, with genuine-price comparisons: HP 61 ink cartridges, HP 63 ink cartridges, HP 64 ink cartridges, HP 65 ink cartridges, HP 67 ink cartridges, HP 902 ink cartridges, HP 910 ink cartridges, HP 952 ink cartridges and HP 962 ink cartridges.
The bottom line
On a non-HP+ printer, remanufactured HP ink is worth it, and the remanufactured HP 63XL black at $23.49 for 480 pages is the clearest example: same shell, same chip, same yield, 63% less. The 64XL and 952XL follow the same pattern. HP 67XL is the exception where the saving is small, and HP+ is the exception where there is none.
