HP Ink Cartridge Compatibility Chart (2026): Which HP Ink Fits Your Printer?

Published October 14, 2026. Written by William Elward, founder of Castle Ink.

Quick answer

Find your printer series in the chart below to see which HP cartridge number it takes. The fastest way to be sure is to read the number printed on the cartridge already in your printer (for example "67" or "952") and buy that number or its XL version. Standard and XL versions of the same number are interchangeable. Different numbers that look alike, such as HP 65 and HP 67, are not. Cartridges are also region-coded: one bought in Europe or Asia won't work in a printer sold in North America. Prefer to search by model? Use Find Ink by Printer, which links to a guide for nearly 300 models.

How do I know which HP ink my printer uses?

  1. Look at the cartridge. The number is on the label (for example "HP 67XL"). The part number, such as 3YM57AN, also identifies it.
  2. Look inside the cartridge door. Many HP printers print the cartridge number on a label near the carriage.
  3. Check the printer. Most HP printers show cartridge information on the control panel, in the HP Smart app, or on a printer status report.
  4. Search by model. Use Find Ink by Printer, or read a model guide such as what ink does the HP DeskJet 2700 use? or what ink does the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e use?

HP look-alike cartridges that don't swap

HP look-alike cartridges: HP 67 vs 65 vs 63 and HP 62 vs 64, with the printers each fits

  • HP 67 vs. HP 65: same shape and the same standard yields, different printers. The 67 fits the newer DeskJet 2700/4100 and ENVY 6000/6400; the 65 fits the older DeskJet 2600/3700 and ENVY 5000. HP now also sells combined "63/65" SKUs, which adds to the confusion. Match the number on your old cartridge.
  • HP 63 vs. HP 65: HP's North America guide lists overlapping printer families for these two. If you're unsure, use the number that came out of your printer.
  • HP 62 vs. HP 64: both used in ENVY models, but not interchangeable.
  • HP 910 vs. 912 vs. 915: the same OfficeJet 8010/8020/8030 printers use 910 in North America, 912 in Europe and 915 in Asia-Pacific.
  • HP 962 vs. 963/964/965: the OfficeJet Pro 9010/9020 series uses 962 in the US and Canada, 963 in Europe, 964 in Latin America and 965 in Asia-Pacific.
  • HP 952 vs. 953: 952 is the North American number, 953 the European one, for the same printers.
  • HP 972 vs. 975: PageWide printers sold in North America take HP 972; the same models sold elsewhere take HP 975.

Why won't an HP cartridge from another country work?

HP printers are tied to a sales region the first time cartridges are installed, and cartridges sold in a different region are rejected. HP says the fix is a regionalization reset through HP Support, and warns that entering wrong reset codes repeatedly can leave the printer unusable (HP Community knowledge base). Buy cartridges sold for your region; every Castle Ink cartridge is made for North American printers.

What do the "e" models and HP+ mean for compatibility?

HP printers whose model names end in a small "e" (DeskJet 2755e, ENVY 6055e, OfficeJet Pro 9015e and so on) are eligible for HP+. They take the same cartridge number as their non-"e" twins. But if HP+ was activated at setup, HP says the printer requires an HP account, internet connection, and Original HP ink for the lifetime of the printer, so remanufactured and compatible cartridges won't work in it. If you haven't set up your printer yet, skip HP+ activation. More in Your HP printer might require a subscription to work.

Non-"e" HP printers can also reject non-HP chips after certain firmware updates. Turn off automatic updates before switching: how to stop HP firmware updates from blocking your ink. If a cartridge is rejected, see is there a secret reset button on HP cartridges? (what actually works).

From the founder: The most common wrong-cartridge order we see isn't a mistake about brand, it's a one-digit slip: 65 instead of 67, 62 instead of 64, 951 instead of 952. Before you check out, hold your old cartridge next to the screen and compare the number character by character. It saves a return and a week without a printer. – William Elward

Should I buy standard or XL HP cartridges?

XL cartridges fit the same printers and almost always cost less per page. Choose standard only if you print very little, since ink can dry out over many months. Run the numbers in is XL ink actually worth it?
