XL vs standard: The 950XL and 951XL are the same physical cartridges as the standard HP 950 and 951 with more ink inside, and every printer listed above accepts either. Going XL roughly doubles the yield — 2,300 pages instead of 1,000 on black, and 1,500 instead of 700 on each color — which is why this 4-pack is built entirely from high-yield cartridges.

Good to know about this printer family: On the OfficeJet Pro 251dw, 276dw, 8100, 8600 and 8610–8660 models the printhead is a separate assembly built into the printer, not part of the cartridge. That keeps ink costs down, but it also means streaking or missing colors that persist after a cartridge change point at the printhead rather than the ink. Run the printer's built-in printhead cleaning from the Tools or Setup menu before assuming a cartridge is faulty.

If you see a "Used or counterfeit cartridge" message, that is a different fault from the Dynamic Security block above — it usually means the printer has already seen that chip or could not read it. Reseating the cartridge and power-cycling the printer clears it in most cases.
