Best Compatible Ink for HP 67 & 67XL (2026): Remanufactured vs Genuine Compared
Last Updated:Last updated: October 28, 2026.
Quick answer: The best value in third-party HP 67 ink is not the 67XL single. Our remanufactured HP 67XL black is $32.95 for 240 pages against $35.89 for the genuine HP 67XL at Staples, which is an 8% saving and not much to write home about. The real savings are in the remanufactured HP 67XXL black at $34.95 for 400 pages (8.7 cents a page versus 15.0 cents for genuine 67XL) and the 67XL black and tri-color 2-pack at $59.95, which is $12.83 less than buying both genuine XLs. The one caveat that matters: if your DeskJet or ENVY model ends in "e" and you turned on HP+ at setup, the printer only accepts Original HP ink, and nothing in this post will change that.

We'll say the obvious thing up front: we sell these cartridges, so you should read our recommendation with that in mind. To keep ourselves honest, we have put LD Products, 4inkjets, Staples, CompAndSave and an Amazon marketplace brand in the same table as our own prices, and where they beat us, we say so. This post covers which printers take HP 67, what every option costs per page as of October 2026, which Castle Ink cartridge we would buy, and the HP+ and printhead issues specific to this family.
HP+ warning: Every "e" model in this family (DeskJet 2755e, 4155e, ENVY 6055e and the rest) offers HP+ enrolment during setup. HP's own FAQ says an activated HP+ printer "will require the use of Original HP Ink for the lifetime of the printer," and HP does not document a way to reverse it. If you want the option of remanufactured ink, skip HP+ when you set the printer up.
What printers use HP 67 ink?
HP 67, 67XL and 67XXL are the same physical cartridge with different ink fills, and they fit HP's current entry-level DeskJet and ENVY lines:
- HP DeskJet 2755e, DeskJet 2752e, DeskJet 2742e, 2734e and 2855e (the DeskJet 2700 series)
- HP DeskJet 4155e, DeskJet 4255e, DeskJet 4133e and DeskJet Plus 4155
- HP DeskJet 1255
- HP ENVY 6055e, ENVY 6455e, ENVY 6458e and ENVY Pro 6475
All of these use one black cartridge and one tri-color cartridge. The tri-color is a single unit holding cyan, magenta and yellow, so when one color runs out, color printing stops.

The table is not flattering to us on the 67XL black single. LD Products, 4inkjets and CompAndSave all sell a remanufactured 67XL black for about $19, which is $14 less than ours and roughly half the cost per page. If the lowest sticker price is all that matters, buy from one of them. What you get from us instead is same-day shipping from Greenlawn, NY on orders placed by 4 PM ET Monday through Friday, a 1-year return window with a full refund, a US phone number with a person on the other end, and a plain promise that we replace or refund any cartridge that arrives defective. We also tell you exactly what you are buying: a genuine HP shell, cleaned, refilled, tested, with HP's own chip and printhead still on it.
Our pick: remanufactured HP 67XXL black
If you are buying one black cartridge, buy the remanufactured HP 67XXL black. It is $34.95 for 400 pages, which is 8.7 cents a page. That is 42% less per page than genuine 67XL black at 15.0 cents, and it costs only $2 more than our own 67XL while holding two-thirds more ink. HP sells the 67XXL (3YM59AA) in Australia but not, at the time of writing, in its US store or at Staples or Walmart, so a remanufactured version is the only practical way for US buyers to get this fill. The trade-off is that LD Products and the others still beat it on sticker price with their $19 XLs; on a per-page basis the gap narrows to about a cent, and you get a cartridge that needs replacing half as often.
If you print color at all, the 67XL black and tri-color 2-pack at $59.95 is the other value option. Two genuine XLs run $72.78 at Staples, so the pack saves $12.83, or about 18%, and it removes the need to reorder twice.
The other Castle Ink HP 67 cartridges: Remanufactured HP 67XL Black ($32.95, 240 pages) and Remanufactured HP 67XL Tri-Color ($34.95, 200 pages). We also stock a 67XL MICR black for check printing, which is a different product for a different job.
HP+, dynamic security and the integrated printhead
HP 67 is an integrated-printhead cartridge: the chip and the print nozzles are part of the cartridge body. That is good news for third-party ink, because remanufacturers reuse HP's original chip rather than cloning one. HP's support documentation says its printers are "intended to work only with cartridges that have new or reused HP chips" and that refilled or remanufactured cartridges that keep the original HP circuitry are "unaffected by dynamic security" (HP support forum, quoting HP's policy). In practice, firmware updates are not the problem on this family.
HP+ is. Every "e" model offers HP+ at setup in exchange for a few months of Instant Ink, and HP's HP+ FAQ says an activated printer requires Original HP ink for its lifetime. On an HP+ printer any non-HP cartridge is refused outright, regardless of chip. If you already enrolled, the only route to cheaper ink is HP's own Instant Ink plans, which we cover in our Instant Ink cost comparison.
Because the printhead rides on the cartridge, the typical complaint about third-party HP 67 is print quality rather than rejection: streaks, smears or fading after a few pages, which usually traces to a worn or clogged printhead on a core that has been recycled too many times. Our testing step exists to catch that before shipping, and our 1-year return window covers it if we miss one. Run the alignment page after every swap; alignment resets each time the printhead changes.
How to choose an HP 67 cartridge
- If your model ends in "e," find out whether HP+ was activated at setup before you buy anything; an HP+ printer accepts Original HP ink only.
- Skip the standard 67 black. At about 19 cents a page it costs more per page than 67XL, and the 400-page XXL is the cheapest per page of all.
- Buy remanufactured, not "compatible." A remanufactured HP 67 keeps HP's original chip and printhead; a newly built one would need to copy both.
- Ignore yield claims above HP's own 240 pages (XL black) and 200 pages (XL color). Anything higher is marketing, not ISO testing.
- If you print color, a black-plus-tri-color pack is usually the better buy, because the tri-color runs out as soon as one of its three colors does.
HP 67 Compatible Ink FAQs
Will a remanufactured HP 67XL work in my DeskJet 2755e?
Yes, provided the printer was not enrolled in HP+ during setup. HP states that remanufactured cartridges that retain the original HP chip are unaffected by dynamic security, but HP+ printers require Original HP ink for the printer's lifetime.
What is the difference between HP 67, 67XL and 67XXL?
They are the same physical cartridge with different ink fills. HP rates 67 black at 120 pages and 67XL black at 240 pages; the 67XXL is rated at roughly 400 pages. The XXL is not currently sold in HP's US store, but remanufactured versions are available.
How much does HP 67 ink cost per page?
Using Staples prices, genuine HP 67 black is about 19 cents per page and 67XL black about 15 cents per page. Castle Ink's remanufactured 67XL comes in around 14 cents and the 67XXL under 9 cents per page.
Is HP Instant Ink cheaper than buying 67XL cartridges?
At the $5.99 50-page tier, Instant Ink works out to about 12 cents per page, which is cheaper than genuine 67XL but more than a remanufactured 67XXL. Unused pages roll over only up to a cap, and Instant Ink cartridges stop working if you cancel.
The bottom line
For HP 67 printers that were set up without HP+, the remanufactured HP 67XXL black at $34.95 for 400 pages is the cartridge we would buy, with the 67XL 2-pack as the pick if you need color too. The 67XL black single saves only about 8% against genuine, and LD Products and CompAndSave undercut us on it; we have shown their prices so you can decide what our shipping, return and support terms are worth to you.
