Cheapest Ink for the HP DeskJet 4155e (2026): Every Option Priced Per Page

Last updated: October 28, 2026.

Quick answer: The HP DeskJet 4155e uses the same HP 67 cartridges as the smaller 2755e, so the cheapest ink is the same: a remanufactured HP 67XXL black. Ours is the remanufactured HP 67XXL black at $34.95 for about 400 pages, 8.7 cents a page, against $35.89 for 240 pages (15.0 cents a page) for genuine HP 67XL black at Staples. That is about 42% less per page. For a 4155e that doubles as a home-office fax and copier, the 67XL black and tri-color 2-pack at $59.95 is the other option worth knowing about, $12.83 under the two genuine XLs. LD Products undercuts us on a single remanufactured 67XL at $18.99. None of this applies if HP+ was activated at setup.

We'll say the obvious thing up front: we sell these cartridges, so we have a stake in where you buy them. Every price below sits next to HP's own, next to LD Products, 4inkjets, Staples, CompAndSave and a marketplace brand, and next to the Instant Ink plan the 4155e was sold with. We point out where other sellers are cheaper.

HP has discontinued the 4155e. The hp.com product page says so, Walmart no longer returns a listing for it, and the Staples URL now redirects to the newer DeskJet 4355. Plenty of people still run one, because it was the cheapest HP with an ADF and fax for several years, and the DeskJet 4255e that replaced it uses the same cartridges. Our full ink guide is at What ink does the HP DeskJet 4155e use.

HP+ warning: Like every "e" DeskJet, the 4155e offered HP+ during setup, bundled with three months of Instant Ink (some retailers advertised six). HP's HP+ FAQ is explicit that an activated printer "will require the use of Original HP Ink for the lifetime of the printer," and there is no documented way back. If HP+ is on, skip to the Instant Ink section below; the remanufactured prices in this post are not available to you.

What ink does the HP DeskJet 4155e use?

Two cartridges, HP 67 black and HP 67 tri-color, with standard and XL fills for each and an XXL black that HP does not currently sell in the US. Faxes, ADF copies and ordinary prints all draw from the same pair.

  • HP 67 Black (3YM56AN), 120 pages; HP 67 Tri-Color (3YM55AN), 100 pages
  • HP 67XL Black (3YM57AN), 240 pages; HP 67XL Tri-Color (3YM58AN), 200 pages
  • HP 67XXL Black (3YM59AN): HP sells it in Australia only; remanufactured XXLs are rated 400 pages

Any cartridge that fits the 4155e also fits the DeskJet 4255e, 4133e and DeskJet Plus 4155, the DeskJet 2755e, 2752e, 2742e, 2734e and 2855e, the DeskJet 1255, and the ENVY 6055e, 6455e, 6458e and Pro 6475. If you have one of each at home and work, you can keep one stock of ink.

On a single 67XL black, three competitors are at $19 and we are at $32.95. That gap is real. What we sell for the extra money is a cartridge whose chip version is stated on the listing, an order that leaves Greenlawn, NY the same day if it comes in by 4 PM ET on a weekday, a US phone number, a replacement or refund on anything that arrives defective, and a full year to return it. For a printer that faxes and copies as well as prints, the XXL and the 2-pack are also better matched to the volume than a 240-page single.

Our pick: remanufactured HP 67XXL black, with the 2-pack for heavier use

A 4155e tends to see more pages than a 2755e because it does more jobs: incoming faxes, multi-page copies through the ADF, scanned-and-printed forms. That pushes the value toward capacity. The remanufactured HP 67XXL black gives you about 400 pages for $34.95, 8.7 cents a page, and fewer mid-job interruptions. It is a genuine HP shell, cleaned, refilled and tested, with HP's original chip and printhead still on it.

If you also print in color, the 67XL black and tri-color 2-pack at $59.95 covers 440 pages across both cartridges and saves $12.83 against buying both genuine XLs. The trade-off: at 13.6 cents a page it does not beat LD's $18.99 single on black alone, and the tri-color is a single tank, so one empty color stops color output. If you fax and copy in black only, take the XXL and skip the bundle.

Other Castle Ink HP 67 cartridges: Remanufactured HP 67XL Black ($32.95, 240 pages) and Remanufactured HP 67XL Tri-Color ($34.95, 200 pages).

HP+, dynamic security and the "cartridge problem" message

HP 67 is an integrated-printhead cartridge, and remanufacturers reuse HP's chip. HP's support forum states that cartridges with "new or reused HP chips" are not affected by dynamic security (HP support forum), so on a 4155e set up without HP+, a remanufactured 67 behaves like a genuine one. HP+ is the exception: it refuses every non-HP cartridge regardless of chip, for life.

The complaint that fills HP's forums for the 4155e and its twin the 2755e is the "used cartridge" or "cartridge problem" message after a refill. The printer remembers that a chip reported empty, and HP's moderators confirm "there is no user-accessible method to disable Dynamic Security" (HP forum, 2024). This bites home refillers far more than buyers of factory-remanufactured cartridges. The other recurring issue, streaks or fading after a few pages, almost always comes down to a worn printhead on a shell that has been through too many cycles, which is a reason to buy from a seller who tests each unit. HP's 63/65 cartridge consolidation does not touch the 67 family.

What does ink for the HP DeskJet 4155e cost per year?

Assumptions: 50 pages a month, 600 a year, mostly black text. Color adds about 18 cents a page on genuine 67XL tri-color. Non-HP rows assume HP+ is off.

Option Yearly cost at 50 pages/month
Genuine HP 67 black (standard) $114.45
Genuine HP 67XL black $89.73
Castle Ink remanufactured 67XL black $82.38
HP Instant Ink, 50-page monthly plan $71.88
Castle Ink remanufactured 67XXL black $52.43

Instant Ink verdict: For an office-style printer the question is whether your volume is steady. Instant Ink's $5.99 plan is $71.88 a year for 50 pages a month with color included, which beats genuine 67XL by about $18. The 100-page tier is $8.49 a month (about 8.5 cents a page), and rollover is capped at three times your allowance, so a busy fax month followed by a quiet one wastes pages. A remanufactured XXL at $52.43 a year is about $20 cheaper than the 50-page plan, you keep the cartridge, and there is no charge in months you do not print. If HP+ is already on, Instant Ink is the cheapest thing left. Plan details are on the Instant Ink plans page; see also our Instant Ink cost breakdown.

How to choose an HP 67 cartridge for the 4155e

  • Confirm HP+ status in Settings before ordering. An activated 4155e can only use Original HP 67 cartridges.
  • Match capacity to the job. If the printer receives faxes or runs ADF copies most days, the 400-page XXL or 440-page 2-pack means fewer mid-job stoppages than a 240-page single.
  • Buy remanufactured rather than "compatible" or "new build" for HP 67; the printhead is on the cartridge and a remanufactured unit keeps HP's original.
  • Do not pay extra for yield claims above HP's 240 (XL black) and 200 (XL tri-color).
  • Keep a spare tri-color only if you print color regularly; a single empty color in the tri-color tank halts color output, but black-only faxes and copies continue.
  • Run the alignment page after each swap, and a cleaning cycle if the first copy shows gaps.

HP DeskJet 4155e Ink FAQs

What is the cheapest ink for the HP DeskJet 4155e?

A remanufactured HP 67XXL black (Castle Ink, $34.95 for about 400 pages, around 8.7 cents a page) is cheapest per page. LD's remanufactured 67XL at $18.99 is the cheapest sticker price. Genuine 67XL black is about 15 cents a page and standard 67 black about 19 cents.

Does the DeskJet 4155e use the same ink as the 2755e?

Yes. Both use HP 67 and 67XL black and tri-color (3YM56AN, 3YM57AN, 3YM55AN, 3YM58AN); the 4155e adds an automatic document feeder and fax. Any cartridge that fits one fits the other.

Is Instant Ink cheaper than cartridges on a 4155e?

At 50 pages a month the $5.99 plan is $71.88 a year (12 cents a page, color included), cheaper than genuine 67XL at $89.73 but more than a remanufactured XXL at $52.43. Instant Ink cartridges stop working if you cancel.

Is the HP DeskJet 4155e still available new?

HP lists it as discontinued, and Walmart and Staples no longer show a new-condition listing; remaining stock and used units sell for roughly $30 to $100. The DeskJet 4255e and 4355 are the current replacements, and the 4255e also uses HP 67 ink.

The bottom line

A DeskJet 4155e that was set up without HP+ is cheapest to run on the remanufactured HP 67XXL black: $34.95, about 400 pages, roughly $52 a year at 50 pages a month. Add the 67XL 2-pack if color copies matter. If HP+ is on, the 50-page Instant Ink plan is the cheapest option left, and if all you want is the lowest price on a single 67XL, LD Products at $18.99 beats us.
