What Ink Does the HP Deskjet 2700 Use?

HP 67 vs 67XL vs 67XXL: the full comparison

The DeskJet 2700 takes two cartridges — one black, one tri-color — and each comes in more than one size. The cartridges are physically identical from the printer’s point of view; the only difference is how much ink is inside.

Those are HP’s ISO figures, measured at roughly 5% page coverage — about what a normal double-spaced text document uses. Anything denser burns through ink faster, and a single full-page photo can consume several percent of a tri-color cartridge on its own. If your real-world yields come in below the numbers above, that is usually the explanation rather than a faulty cartridge.

The standard-size cartridges exist mainly because that is what ships inside a new printer. On a cost-per-page basis they are the worst value of the three, which is why almost nobody buys them deliberately a second time.

How to Replace HP 67 Cartridges in a Deskjet 2700

1. Turn the printer on and open the front access door.
2. Wait for the cartridge carriage to stop moving.
3. Press the old cartridge down and pull it out toward you.
4. Remove the pink plastic tab from the new HP 67/67XL cartridge.
5. Slide the cartridge into the slot at a slight upward angle and push until it clicks.
6. Close the access door — alignment runs automatically.

Which printers use HP 67 ink?

What About the DeskJet 2700e, 2722e, 2723e and 2742e?

Same cartridges. The "e" on the end of a model number does not change the ink at all — a 2700e, 2722e, 2723e, 2724e or 2742e takes exactly the same HP 67, 67XL and 67XXL cartridges as the standard DeskJet 2700. If you have been searching specifically for 2700e ink, everything on this page applies to your printer.

What the "e" does signal is that the printer was sold as HP+ and Instant Ink eligible. That is a difference in how you buy ink, not in which ink fits.

The part worth understanding before you order. Enrolling in HP+ at setup gets you an extended warranty and a block of free Instant Ink months. In exchange, HP’s terms require the printer to use Original HP cartridges for the life of the printer, to stay connected to the internet, and to remain tied to an HP account. HP presents enrolment as a one-time choice made during setup.

So the practical rule is simple. If you declined HP+, or you have a non-e model, cartridges that carry an HP chip work, including our remanufactured 67XL. Cartridges with a third-party chip are blocked by HP dynamic security either way. If you enrolled, the printer will refuse third-party cartridges, and no compatible cartridge from any supplier will change that. What HP 67 error messages actually mean

Three messages account for most of the support questions we get about this cartridge.

"Cartridge problem" or "Cartridge not recognised." Nine times out of ten this is the contacts, not the cartridge. Take it out, check that the protective tape has been fully removed from the copper contacts and the ink nozzle, wipe the contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, and reseat it firmly enough to click.

"Non-HP chip detected" or "Non-HP ink installed." This is a notice, not a fault. HP shows it whenever a cartridge is not one of theirs; the printer continues working. Worth being straight about, though: HP has periodically issued firmware updates that stop recognising some third-party cartridges, and if your printer is set to update automatically it can start refusing a cartridge that worked last month. You can turn automatic firmware updates off in the printer’s web settings if you would rather control when that happens.

Low-ink warnings that appear far too early. The DeskJet estimates ink level rather than measuring it, and the estimate is deliberately conservative. A cartridge showing empty frequently has usable ink left. Keep printing until quality actually drops.

Does it work without HP+, and can I then use non-HP ink?

HP+ is optional on the 2755e. Even without it, the printer has HP dynamic security, which rejects cartridges with non-HP chips. Remanufactured cartridges that reuse the original HP chip, like ours, are the ones that work.

I turned on HP+ during setup. Can I undo it?

In practice, no. HP has told owners on its support forum that enrollment can't be reversed, and HP's terms require Original HP ink for the life of the printer once it is enrolled.

I moved from the UK and my printer rejects US HP 67 cartridges. Why?

The 2700 series is region-locked. A UK-bought 2710e takes HP 305 cartridges and refuses the US HP 67, and owners report HP's regional reset doesn't always fix it. Buy cartridges for the region the printer was sold in.

I bought one used without the setup cartridges and new HP cartridges won't work.

New DeskJets expect to be primed with setup cartridges first. HP support resolves this with an out-of-box (OOBE) reset, so contact HP before buying more ink.

Can it print borderless photos, scan a stack or print two-sided?

No to all three. It prints photos with a border, scans one page at a time on the glass and does manual two-sided printing, where you flip the stack when prompted.
