Quick answer: The HP DeskJet 2842e uses HP 67 ink — one black and one tri-color cartridge. The high-yield HP 67XL cartridges (HP 67XL Black and HP 67XL Tri-Color) print about 240 black and 200 color pages, roughly twice as many as standard HP 67.

Still sold new at Best Buy Canada (on backorder in October 2026). We found no U.S. listing; the closely related DeskJet 2855e takes the same HP 67 cartridges.

Important — HP+ warning: The "e" in HP DeskJet 2842e means it was sold for HP+. If you activated HP+ during setup, the printer is locked to Original HP cartridges for its lifetime, and compatible or remanufactured cartridges will be rejected with a "cartridge problem" or "non-HP cartridge" message. HP+ cannot be switched off after activation. If you skipped HP+ at setup, cartridges that carry an HP chip still work, including our remanufactured 67XL. Cartridges with a non-HP chip are blocked by HP dynamic security either way, and HP says firmware updates can block cartridges that worked before. See how to keep HP firmware updates from blocking your ink and our HP Instant Ink vs. compatible cartridges breakdown before you buy.
The HP DeskJet 2842e belongs to HP's DeskJet 2800e series. The same HP 67 / 67XL cartridges fit the DeskJet 2800e, 2827e, 2842e, 2852e and 2855e, the DeskJet 2700e series, as well as the ENVY 6000, 6055e and 6400 series.
The DeskJet 2842e is a compact home all-in-one (print, scan, copy) with Wi-Fi and a 60-sheet input tray, with no automatic document feeder. It is built for light home printing.
Do not confuse HP 67 with HP 65 or HP 68. They look similar, but HP 65 (sold since July 2026 as a combined HP 63/65 cartridge) fits the older DeskJet 2600/3700 printers and HP 68 fits the newer ENVY 6100e/6500e printers. Neither fits this printer.

How to Replace Ink in the HP DeskJet 2842e
- Turn the printer on and open the ink cartridge access door (lift the scanner lid and pull the front door down). Wait for the carriage to move to the center and stop.
- Press down lightly on the cartridge you are replacing to release it, then pull it out toward you. The tri-color cartridge sits on the left, black on the right.
- Take the new cartridge out of its packaging and pull off the plastic tape by its pink or orange tab. Do not touch the copper contacts or the ink nozzles.
- Slide the cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle, nozzles facing the printer, and push it forward until it snaps into place.
- Close the access door. The printer may print an alignment page — scan it if the control panel or HP Smart app asks you to.
Troubleshooting Tips
"Cartridge problem" or "non-HP cartridge detected": Check whether HP+ is active in the HP Smart app. If it is, only Original HP cartridges will work. If it is not, wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth, let them dry, and reseat the cartridge. A cartridge with a non-HP chip will still be refused, because HP dynamic security blocks those whether or not HP+ is on.
Streaks or missing colors: Run "Clean Printheads" from the HP Smart app or the printer's Tools menu. The printhead is built into each cartridge on this printer, so if one cleaning cycle does not fix it, the cartridge itself is the likely culprit.
Low-ink warning on a brand-new printer: The cartridges that ship in the box are lower-yield setup cartridges. That early warning is normal — it is not a fault.
What DeskJet 2842e owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support forum and owner reviews, answered in our words.
Which cartridge numbers do I buy?
HP 67 black and tri-color, or HP 67XL for about twice the pages. An HP rep on HP's forum notes these are the North American cartridges; printers sold in other regions take their own version.
Why did the first cartridges run out so fast?
The printer ships with HP 67 setup cartridges, which hold less ink than the retail cartridges you replace them with.
Does it have a document feeder?
No. It scans and copies one page at a time on the flatbed glass. If you need a feeder, the DeskJet 4255e is the HP 67 model that has one.
Can it print on both sides automatically?
No. Two-sided printing is manual: the driver tells you when to flip the stack.
How many pages a month is it meant for?
HP recommends 50 to 100 pages a month for this family, with a maximum duty cycle of 1,000.
DeskJet 2842e quirks worth knowing
- The 2842e is a retailer version of HP's DeskJet 2800e family (2820e, 2822e, 2855e). Among the stores we checked, only Best Buy Canada lists it.
- HP warns that firmware updates may block cartridges that worked before. That matters even if you skipped HP+.
- The tray holds only 60 sheets, but it takes custom sizes from 3 x 5 in up to legal (8.5 x 14 in).
- Besides the HP Smart app, it prints from Apple AirPrint and Mopria devices with no extra software.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the HP DeskJet 2842e use HP 67 or HP 67XL?
Both fit the same slots. XL simply holds more ink.
Why does my HP DeskJet 2842e reject compatible cartridges?
One of two reasons. Either HP+ was activated during setup, which locks the printer to Original HP cartridges for life, or the cartridge has a non-HP chip, which HP dynamic security blocks whether or not HP+ is on. On a printer not enrolled in HP+, remanufactured cartridges that keep the original HP chip, like ours, are the ones that work.
Does using remanufactured cartridges void my warranty?
No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, HP cannot void your printer warranty only because you used compatible or remanufactured cartridges. HP+ is a separate restriction you agree to during setup.
How are these page yields measured?
They are approximate figures based on HP's ISO/IEC 24711 testing. Real results depend on what and how often you print.
