What Ink Does the HP Envy 5000 Use?

Quick answer: The HP ENVY 5000 uses HP 65 ink cartridges in the US and Canada — one HP 65 Black and one HP 65 Tri-Color. The high-yield HP 65XL cartridges fit the same slots and print roughly two and a half times as many pages. (Outside North America, the same printers take HP 304.)

2026 change: HP has folded HP 65 into a combined HP 63/65 line, so stores now list "HP 63/65" or "63XL/65XL" instead of plain HP 65. HP says the combined cartridge works in the ENVY 5000 series. The old, pre-2026 HP 63 still does not fit.

What Ink Cartridges Does the HP ENVY 5000 Take?

The ENVY 5000 belongs to HP's ENVY 5000 All-in-One series (5010, 5012, 5020, 5030, 5032, 5034, 5052, 5055) and holds two cartridges: one black and one tri-color (cyan, magenta and yellow in a single cartridge).

Cartridge Part number Approx. yield Castle Ink option
HP 65 Black (standard) N9K02AN ~120 pages —
HP 65XL Black (high yield) N9K04AN ~300 pages Remanufactured HP 65XL Black
HP 65 Tri-Color (standard) N9K01AN ~100 pages —
HP 65XL Tri-Color (high yield) N9K03AN ~300 pages Remanufactured HP 65XL Tri-Color

Yields are ISO/IEC estimates at about 5% page coverage. Photos and full-color pages use much more ink.

Is HP 65 the Same as HP 65XL?

They are interchangeable in the ENVY 5000: same shape, same slot. The XL simply holds more ink. For anyone printing more than a few pages a week, 65XL costs less per page and needs changing far less often.

Is HP 65 the Same as HP 67 or HP 63?

No. HP 67 belongs to the DeskJet 2700 / 4100 and ENVY 6000 families, and HP 63 to older models such as the DeskJet 1110, 2130 and 3630. They look similar, but they won’t seat or be recognized in the ENVY 5000. Match the number on the label to "65" before you buy.

Does the HP ENVY 5000 Use HP 63 or HP 65?

HP 65 in the US and Canada. An earlier version of this page listed HP 63, which is incorrect. HP 63 fits older printers such as the DeskJet 1110, 2130 and 3630 and the ENVY 4520, not the ENVY 5000 series. If you already have pre-2026 HP 63 cartridges on hand, they won't work in this printer.

Can I Use Remanufactured Ink in the HP ENVY 5000?

Yes. Remanufactured HP 65XL cartridges are original HP shells that are cleaned, refilled and tested, so they fit and talk to the printer like new ones. Castle Ink's inkjet cartridges are remanufactured and backed by a 1-year satisfaction guarantee. See compatible vs remanufactured vs OEM ink for the differences.

Heads-up on HP Instant Ink and HP+: subscription cartridges stop working when the subscription ends, and printers enrolled in HP+ are locked to Original HP cartridges. Retail and remanufactured cartridges work normally in printers that aren't enrolled.

How Do I Replace the Ink Cartridges in the HP ENVY 5000?

  1. Turn the printer on and open the cartridge access door. The carriage slides to the center.
  2. Wait until the carriage stops moving and the printer is quiet.
  3. Press down gently on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it toward you.
  4. Peel the plastic tape off the new cartridge. Don't touch the copper contacts or the nozzles.
  5. Slide the new cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle until it clicks. Tri-Color goes on the left, Black on the right.
  6. Close the door. If an alignment page prints, follow the on-screen or HP Smart prompts, which usually means scanning that page.

Why Won't My ENVY 5000 Recognize the New Cartridge?

  • Tape still on the contacts. This is the most common cause.
  • Dirty contacts. Wipe the copper strip on the cartridge and in the carriage with a dry, lint-free cloth.
  • Wrong number. HP 63, 67 and 304 won't work in a US-market printer built for HP 65.
  • "Non-HP chip" message. This is a notice, not a fault. Acknowledge it and printing continues.

What ENVY 5000 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support forum and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Instant Ink sent me HP 63 cartridges. Will they work?

Old HP 63 cartridges won't. The new combined "HP 63/65" cartridges HP has sold since mid-2026 do; check the box for the 63/65 label.

Can I use refilled or remanufactured cartridges?

Only ones that keep HP's original chip. HP's product page says the ENVY 5055 blocks cartridges with modified or non-HP chips and that firmware updates can block cartridges that previously worked.

Does it print two-sided automatically?

Yes, automatic two-sided printing is built in. Scanning is on the flatbed only, one page at a time.

How much paper does it hold, and does it take legal size?

Up to 100 sheets, and it accepts paper up to 8.5 × 14 in.

Prints have missing lines even after cleaning and alignment.

On this printer the printhead is part of the cartridge, so stubborn missing lines usually mean a clogged or worn cartridge. A fresh cartridge is the fix. (That is our experience, not an HP statement.)

ENVY 5000 quirks worth knowing

  • The paper tray forms the base of the printer, so it must sit on a flat, firm surface. Owners on Best Buy call the tray flimsy.
  • HP's own product page warns that periodic firmware updates may block cartridges that previously worked. Turning off automatic updates in the HP Smart app reduces the risk.
  • The setup cartridges in the box are rated for only about 115 black and 100 color pages.
  • Owners report fewer streaking problems when they leave the printer in sleep mode rather than switching it off at the wall.
