What Ink Does the HP DeskJet 2655 Use?
Last Updated:Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said compatible cartridges work normally in the DeskJet 2655 because it is not an HP+ printer, and that the HP 63/65 merger changes nothing for 2655 owners. HP lists the 2655 as a dynamic-security printer that blocks cartridges with non-HP or modified chips, and the merged line has no high-yield tri-color.

2026 change: In July 2026 HP folded HP 65 into a combined HP 63/65 line, so stores now list "HP 63/65" instead of plain HP 65. HP says the new cartridges work in every printer that took HP 63 or HP 65, and Staples lists the DeskJet 2655 as compatible. The new high-yield black (B7RT5AN) is rated for about 300 pages, the same as the old 65XL black. The new tri-color (B7RT2AN) is rated for about 100 pages, and we could not find a high-yield 63/65 tri-color. The old HP 65XL tri-color, rated for about 300 pages, still fits the 2655.

One thing to know about tri-color cartridges: cyan, magenta and yellow share a single housing. When any one color runs out the whole cartridge is finished, even with ink left in the other two. It is the main reason cost per page on this class of printer looks worse than the sticker price suggests.
Skip the Standard Cartridge
HP 65 standard black holds about 120 pages and frequently sells for 60–70% of the XL price. The XL is roughly two and a half times the pages. On a printer this cheap, the cartridges are the cost — buying standard is how a $60 printer turns into a $200-a-year habit.
Is the DeskJet 2655 Discontinued?
Yes, HP has discontinued it and names the DeskJet 2755e as the successor. Two things to know if you take that upgrade: the 2755e uses HP 67, so your cartridges will not carry over, and it is an HP+ model, which can permanently lock the printer to Original HP ink if you enrol at setup.

Will the new combined HP 63/65 cartridges work in my DeskJet 2655?
Yes. HP says the 63/65 line works in every printer that took HP 63 or HP 65, and Staples' listing for the 63/65XL black (B7RT5AN) names the DeskJet 2655. Your existing HP 65 cartridges still work too.
Is there still a high-yield tri-color cartridge?
Not in the new line. Retailers list only a standard 63/65 tri-color, rated for about 100 pages. The old HP 65XL tri-color (N9K03AN, about 300 pages) still fits, and it is one of the cartridges we remanufacture.
It isn't an HP+ printer. Can I use any non-HP cartridge?
No. HP says the 2655 has dynamic security turned on. It accepts cartridges with a new or reused HP chip and blocks ones with non-HP or modified chips, and a firmware update can block cartridges that worked before. Remanufactured cartridges that keep the original HP chip, like ours, are the safer choice.
Can the 2655 print on both sides automatically?
No. Two-sided printing is manual: the driver prints one side, then tells you to flip and reload the pages.
What should I do about a "printer failure" or ink system error?
HP's support steps start with turning the printer off and unplugging it for about 60 seconds, then reseating both cartridges and cleaning their contacts with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water. These errors are often a cartridge-recognition problem.
DeskJet 2655 quirks worth knowing
- HP's dynamic security is switched on even though the 2655 is not an HP+ or "e" model. Many guides miss this and say any cartridge works.
- The merged HP 63/65 2-pack (B87FDAN) pairs an XL black with a standard tri-color. Staples' own page gives conflicting yields for it, so go by the single-cartridge ratings: about 300 pages black and 100 tri-color.
- The input tray takes 60 sheets of plain paper or up to 5 envelopes, and custom sizes up to 8.5 x 14 in. The scanner glass only covers up to 8.5 x 11.69 in, so legal pages can be printed but not scanned whole.
- Connections are Wi-Fi and USB. There is no Ethernet port.
