What Ink Does the HP DeskJet 2652 Use?
Last Updated:Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said a "non-HP chip" message on the DeskJet 2652 is only a notice and the printer keeps printing. HP says this series uses dynamic security to block cartridges with modified or non-HP chips; only cartridges with a new or reused HP chip are accepted.
Quick answer: The HP DeskJet 2652 uses HP 65 ink cartridges in the US and Canada — one HP 65 Black and one HP 65 Tri-Color. The high-yield HP 65XL versions fit the same slots and print roughly two and a half times as many pages. (In Europe the same printer family takes HP 304 instead.) Since July 2026 HP sells HP 65 as part of a combined HP 63/65 line, which also fits.
2026 change: In July 2026 HP folded HP 65 into a combined HP 63/65 line, so stores now list "HP 63/65" instead of plain HP 65. HP says the combined cartridges work in the DeskJet 2652 with no firmware update. The old, pre-2026 HP 63 still does not fit, and the new line has no high-yield tri-color: the 63/65 tri-color is rated at about 100 pages.

What Ink Cartridges Does the HP DeskJet 2652 Take?
The DeskJet 2652 is part of HP's DeskJet 2600 All-in-One series, and it holds just two cartridges:
| Cartridge | HP part number | Approx. yield | Castle Ink option |
|---|---|---|---|
| HP 65 Black (standard) | N9K02AN | ~120 pages | — |
| HP 65XL Black (high yield) | N9K04AN | ~300 pages | Remanufactured HP 65XL Black |
| HP 65 Tri-Color (standard) | N9K01AN | ~100 pages | — |
| HP 65XL Tri-Color (high yield) | N9K03AN | ~300 pages | Remanufactured HP 65XL Tri-Color |
| HP 63/65XL Black (high yield, 2026) | B7RT5AN | ~300 pages | — |
| HP 63/65 Tri-Color (2026) | B7RT2AN | ~100 pages | — |
Page yields are ISO/IEC estimates at about 5% coverage. Photos and graphics-heavy pages use far more ink. HP has replaced its original HP 65 part numbers with the HP 63/65 line, which has no high-yield tri-color. Our remanufactured 65XL cartridges are built on original HP 65XL shells.
Does the HP DeskJet 2652 Use HP 63 or HP 65?
HP 65. This is the most common mix-up with this printer. Older HP 63 cartridges (F6U part numbers) look almost identical but belong to the DeskJet 1110, 2130 and 3630 families, and they will not work in a DeskJet 2652. The combined HP 63/65 cartridges HP introduced in July 2026 do fit. Check the number printed on the cartridge label before you order.
Is HP 65 the Same as HP 65XL?
They are interchangeable in the DeskJet 2652 — same size, same slot — but the XL holds more ink. The standard HP 65 Black prints about 120 pages; the 65XL Black prints about 300. For anyone printing more than a few pages a week, the XL costs less per page and means fewer mid-job swaps.
Can I Use Remanufactured or Compatible Ink in the DeskJet 2652?
Yes. Remanufactured HP 65XL cartridges are original HP shells that have been cleaned, refilled and tested, so they keep the HP chip this printer checks for. HP says the 2600 series uses dynamic security to block cartridges with modified or non-HP chips, so compatibles with a third-party chip can be rejected. Castle Ink's inkjet cartridges are remanufactured and backed by a 1-year satisfaction guarantee. If you want the full breakdown of the options, see compatible vs remanufactured vs OEM ink.
One caution: if your printer was ever enrolled in HP Instant Ink, it uses subscription cartridges that stop working when the subscription ends. Retail and remanufactured cartridges work normally once you cancel.
How Do I Replace the Ink in an HP DeskJet 2652?
- Turn the printer on and lift the front access door. The carriage slides to the center.
- Wait until the carriage stops and goes quiet.
- Press down lightly on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it toward you out of the slot.
- Remove the plastic tape from the new cartridge. Do not touch the copper contacts or the ink nozzles.
- Slide the new cartridge in at a slight upward angle until it clicks. Tri-Color goes on the left, Black on the right.
- Close the access door. The printer may print an alignment page — place it face down on the scanner glass and press the Copy button to finish alignment.
Why Is My DeskJet 2652 Not Recognizing the New Cartridge?
- Tape still on: a thin strip of protective film over the contacts is the number-one cause.
- Dirty contacts: wipe the copper strip on the cartridge and inside the carriage with a dry, lint-free cloth.
- Wrong number: older HP 63 (F6U part numbers) and HP 304 cartridges will not work in a US DeskJet 2652. The newer combined HP 63/65 cartridges do.
- Firmware notice: HP says this printer uses dynamic security. A cartridge with a reused HP chip, like a remanufactured one, may show a notice and keep printing. A cartridge with a modified or non-HP chip can be blocked outright, and no setting changes that.
If it still refuses, our guide on fixing an "incompatible cartridge" message on HP printers walks through every error wording.
What DeskJet 2652 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support forum and owner reviews, answered in our words.
Will the new HP 63/65 cartridges work in my DeskJet 2652?
Yes. HP says the merged 63/65 cartridges work in every printer that took HP 63 or HP 65, with no firmware update needed.
Why does the box say "63/65" when my printer takes HP 65?
HP merged the two lines in July 2026, citing confusion between HP 63 and HP 65 as the reason. Same slot, same printer; only the label changed.
Is there still a high-yield color cartridge?
Not in HP's new line, which has a 63/65XL black (about 300 pages) but no XL tri-color. HP's old 65XL tri-color (N9K03AN) is being phased out. We still sell a remanufactured 65XL tri-color rated at about 300 pages.
How fast does it print?
HP rates the DeskJet 2600 series at up to 7.5 pages a minute in black and 5.5 in color (ISO).
Does it have a document feeder or fax?
No. It prints, copies and scans from the glass, one page at a time, and connects over Wi-Fi with AirPrint support.
DeskJet 2652 quirks worth knowing
- HP's dynamic-security wording for this series specifically allows cartridges with "reused HP electronic circuitry," which is what a remanufactured HP cartridge has. Cartridges with modified or non-HP chips are the ones it blocks.
- After the 2026 change, the most color you can get from a new Original HP cartridge is about 100 pages, down from 300 with the 65XL tri-color.
- The output tray folds away when closed and holds 25 sheets when open, so collect long jobs as they print.
- HP's product number for the 2652 is V1N05A; the DeskJet 2655 (V1N01A) is the same 2600-series printer and takes the same ink.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many pages does an HP 65XL cartridge print in the DeskJet 2652?
About 300 pages for the HP 65XL Black and about 300 pages for the HP 65XL Tri-Color, measured at roughly 5% page coverage.

Yes. If one cartridge is empty or removed, the DeskJet 2652 switches to single-cartridge mode and keeps printing with the other, though print quality and speed may drop.
Is the HP DeskJet 2652 discontinued?
Yes. HP no longer sells it new and points buyers to the DeskJet 2755e. Ink is still easy to find: HP sells the combined HP 63/65 cartridges, and we sell remanufactured HP 65XL.
What other printers use HP 65 ink?
