Quick answer: The HP DeskJet 3700 (3720, 3730, 3752, 3755, 3758) uses HP 65 Black and HP 65 Tri-color ink cartridges. Since July 2026 HP also sells them as HP 63/65, which fits the same slots. The legacy HP 65XL high-yield cartridges are rated for about 300 pages each: 2.5 times the standard black and 3 times the standard tri-color.
2026 change: In July 2026 HP merged HP 63 and HP 65 into a single HP 63/65 cartridge line and is phasing out the old HP 65 part numbers. HP says the new cartridges work in every printer that took HP 65, and its 63/65XL Black page lists the DeskJet 3755. The new tri-color is rated for about 100 pages and the new XL black for about 300. There is no XL tri-color, so the old HP 65XL tri-color (N9K03AN, about 300 pages) is still the high-yield color option.

How to Replace Ink in the HP DeskJet 3700
- Power the printer on and open the ink-cartridge access door at the front — the carriage will slide to the center.
- Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it forward and out of its slot.
- Unwrap the new cartridge and pull the orange tab to remove the protective plastic. Do not touch the gold contacts or copper-colored ink nozzles.
- Slide the new cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle (black on the right, tri-color on the left) and push up until you hear it click into place.
- Close the access door. The printer will automatically print an alignment page — keep it briefly to confirm the print is sharp and colors are correct.
Troubleshooting Tips
"Cartridge missing or damaged" error: Power-cycle the printer with the cartridges installed. If it persists, remove the cartridge, wipe the gold contacts with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water, dry thoroughly, and reinsert at the upward angle until you hear it click.
Streaky or faded prints: Open HP Smart App and run Printer Settings > Tools > Clean Ink Cartridges. Two cleaning cycles usually resolve clogged nozzles.
Alignment page prints blank or skewed: Confirm you removed the orange protective tab from each new cartridge and that both are seated with a firm click. Then run alignment again from HP Smart.
