What Ink Does the HP DeskJet 2734e Use?

Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said HP gives you seven days to opt out of HP+ and that a 2734e without HP+ runs any compatible cartridge. HP+ can only be skipped during setup, and HP dynamic security blocks cartridges with non-HP chips whether or not HP+ is on. It also listed an HP 67XXL cartridge, which we could not confirm is sold in the U.S.

The HP DeskJet 2734e uses HP 67 and HP 67XL ink cartridges — one black, one tri-color. It is a retail variant of HP's DeskJet 2700e series, which means it takes exactly the same ink as the 2732, 2742e, 2752 and 2755e. There is no separate "2734e cartridge."

Model numbers in the DeskJet 2700e range are largely retailer-specific — the 2734e, 2742e and 2752 are the same machine under different SKUs. That is genuinely useful when you are shopping: any cartridge listed as fitting a DeskJet 2755e will fit your 2734e, which opens up a much wider set of options than searching the exact model number.

HP+ and the HP DeskJet 2734e

The HP DeskJet 2734e is sold as an HP+ printer. HP now calls HP+ optional, but it can only be skipped during setup. If you turned it on, HP's terms require Original HP ink for the life of the printer, and HP Community experts say enrollment can't be undone.

If you are not sure which state your printer is in, open the HP Smart app and look at the printer's details — an HP+ printer is labelled as such. Even without HP+, the 2734e uses HP dynamic security, which blocks cartridges with modified or non-HP chips. Cartridges that reuse an original HP chip, like our remanufactured 67XL, are the ones that work on a printer that isn't enrolled.

How to Replace the Ink in the HP DeskJet 2734e

1. Turn the printer on — the carriage will not move to the access position if it is powered off.
2. Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to slide to the centre and stop.
3. Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it toward you and out.
4. Unwrap the new cartridge and peel off the protective tape. Do not touch the copper contacts or the nozzle plate.
5. Slide the new cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle and press until it clicks firmly into place.
6. Close the door and let the printer run its alignment page. Skipping alignment is the most common cause of banding people blame on the cartridge.

Troubleshooting the HP DeskJet 2734e

Faded or streaky text on a nearly-new cartridge. Run one cleaning cycle from HP Smart, print a test page, and stop there. Repeated back-to-back cleanings on a DeskJet 2700e can burn through 10–15% of a standard cartridge in a few minutes.

Print quality drops off after the printer sits unused. Print one colour page every couple of weeks. It costs almost nothing and it keeps the nozzles from drying, which is far cheaper than the deep cleaning cycles required to recover them.

The ink gauge reads low on a brand-new cartridge. Ink level reporting is an estimate, and on compatible cartridges it can read low, unknown, or not at all. Judge by print quality, not by the gauge.

Cartridges That Do Not Fit the HP DeskJet 2734e

These come up constantly in mistaken orders. None of them will work in an HP DeskJet 2734e:

• HP 65 / 65XL — looks similar, different chip and shape
• HP 63 / 63XL — older DeskJet and Envy models

Only if it carries an HP chip. HP says the 2734e uses dynamic security to block cartridges with modified or non-HP chips, with or without HP+. Remanufactured cartridges that reuse the original HP chip, like our 67XL, are the ones that work on a printer that isn't enrolled in HP+.

I turned on HP+ during setup. Can I undo it?

What happens when the free Instant Ink months run out?

HP includes the first 6 months. After that, HP charges a monthly fee automatically unless you cancel.

Does it work with 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

Yes. The 2700e series has dual-band Wi-Fi, plus Bluetooth for setup from a phone.

Is the 2734e still sold, and what replaced it?

HP lists it as discontinued and points to the DeskJet 2855e as the newer model.

DeskJet 2734e quirks worth knowing

• The odd model number is a bundle: HP sold the 2734e as a "Bonus 6 Months of Instant Ink" version of the 2700e series (HP product number 26K72A#B1H).
• HP's wording on this model blocks cartridges with modified HP chips as well as non-HP ones. A reused HP chip is fine; an altered one may not be.
• HP measures its HP 67 page yields on the ENVY 6000 series, not on the DeskJet itself.
• The Wi-Fi has a "self-reset" feature that restarts the wireless connection by itself to recover from dropped links.

Is the DeskJet 2734e the same as the 2755e?
Functionally yes. Both are DeskJet 2700e series machines and both use HP 67 / 67XL.

Can I put HP 67XL in a 2734e that came with standard 67?
Yes. The XL is the high-yield version of the same cartridge and fits the same carriage.

How many pages will an HP 67XL black give me?
Around 240 pages at 5% coverage, versus about 120 for the standard 67.

Why won't my printer recognise a brand new cartridge?
Usually the protective tape or the orange clip is still attached, or the cartridge is not clicked fully home. Reseat it firmly. If it still refuses, check that the cartridge carries an HP chip; HP dynamic security blocks cartridges that don't.

Does the 2734e print double-sided automatically?
No. Two-sided printing on this model is manual — you flip the stack yourself.
