Dynamic security and HP+: what you are actually buying into
Two separate things can restrict which ink a 2827e accepts, and it helps to keep them apart.
Dynamic security is firmware that rejects cartridges using a non-HP chip. HP declares it on this series. In practice, cartridges that reuse a genuine HP chip on a refilled shell — that is, proper remanufactured cartridges — are the ones that keep working; clone-chip cartridges are the ones that get refused. Owner reports of the 2827e refusing aftermarket cartridges are real, so this is not theoretical.
HP+ is the optional enrollment offered at setup. Accepting it extends the warranty and adds Instant Ink months, and in exchange permanently commits the printer to Original HP cartridges. If you want the option of buying third-party ink at all, decline HP+ during setup — it cannot practically be undone later.
If you have already enrolled in HP+, no cartridge choice will help; you are on Original HP for the life of that printer.
How to replace the cartridges
- Turn the printer on and load a few sheets of plain paper.
- Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to stop.
- Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it out toward you. Black is on the right, tri-color on the left.
- Unwrap the new cartridge and pull the plastic tape off the copper contacts. Do not touch the contacts or the nozzle plate.
- Slide it in at a slight upward angle and push until it clicks.

- "Cartridge problem" with a third-party cartridge. Check HP+ enrollment status first. If not enrolled, clean the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, reseat until it clicks, and power-cycle. If a clone-chip cartridge is still refused, that is dynamic security working as designed — a remanufactured cartridge with an original HP chip is the fix.
- Missing colors or streaking. The printhead is built into the HP 67 cartridge, so a clog is a cartridge problem. Run the clean-cartridge routine twice; if gaps remain, replace it.
- Won't join the Wi-Fi. The 2827e is 2.4 GHz only. A 5 GHz-only SSID, or a combined-band network that steers it to 5 GHz, will fail during setup.
