• HP+ printers: the ENVY Inspire "e" models are HP+ printers. If HP+ was activated at setup, they accept only Original HP ink.
• Regional versions: HP cartridges are region-coded. Buy HP 64 for a printer bought in North America; versions sold for European printers carry a different number and will not work here.
• MICR: for check printing, use the HP 64XL Black MICR instead.

Chips, Printer Messages & Installation

HP+ warning: if your printer was set up with HP+ (offered on most "e" models), HP locks it to Original HP cartridges for the life of the printer, and no remanufactured or third-party cartridge will work. An "e" model that was never enrolled in HP+ accepts these cartridges. Check before you order.

Dynamic security: HP firmware updates can block cartridges that carry a non-HP chip. These cartridges are rebuilt from genuine HP cartridges and keep the original HP chip. To be safe, turn off automatic firmware updates in the printer or HP Smart app before installing. If you see a "used cartridge" or "non-genuine" notice, select OK or Continue.

Installing: open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to stop. Press down on the old cartridge to release it and pull it out. Pull the plastic tape off the new cartridge by its tab without touching the copper contacts or nozzles, slide it into its slot until it clicks, close the door and print the alignment page if prompted.

"Cartridge problem" or not recognized: remove the cartridge, check all the tape is off, wipe the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth and reseat it. For streaks, run the printhead cleaning from the printer menu or HP Smart; the printhead is built into the cartridge.
