Quick answer: The HP ENVY Inspire 7200e uses HP 64 ink: HP 64 black and tri-color cartridges in the US: HP 64 black (N9J90AN, about 200 pages) and tri-color (N9J89AN, about 165), or the high-yield HP 64XL black (N9J92AN, about 600) and tri-color (N9J91AN, about 415). It does not use HP 62 or HP 67.

What Does ENVY Inspire 7200e Ink Cost per Page?
On November 2, 2026, Staples listed HP's 64XL black at $62.89 and 64XL tri-color at $68.89 (about 10.5¢ and 16.6¢ a page), with the XL 2-pack at $132.86; 4inkjets had the same cartridges at $55.99 and $74.99. Standard HP 64 cartridges hold about a third as much ink, so they cost more per page. And because cyan, magenta and yellow share one tri-color housing, the cartridge is finished when any one color runs out.
Will Remanufactured Ink Work?
HP+ warning: if HP+ was activated when the printer was set up, HP's terms require Original HP ink for the life of the printer, and non-HP cartridges, ours included, will be rejected. HP+ can only be declined during setup; HP documents no way to turn it off afterward.
If you declined HP+, remanufactured cartridges can work, with one limit. HP says this printer uses dynamic security: it works only with cartridges that have new or reused HP chips, blocks cartridges with modified or non-HP chips, and periodic firmware updates may block cartridges that worked before. Cartridges that reuse the original HP chip, like our remanufactured 64XL, are the ones designed to pass. If you plan to run non-HP ink, turning off automatic firmware updates in HP Smart is a sensible precaution.
How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP ENVY Inspire 7200e?
- Turn the printer on and open the front cartridge access door. Wait for the carriage to move to the center and stop.
- Press down lightly on the cartridge you are replacing to release it, then pull it toward you. Tri-color sits on the left, black on the right.
- Unpack the new cartridge and pull off the plastic tape by its tab. Do not touch the copper contacts or the ink nozzles.
- Slide the cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle, nozzles toward the printer, and push it forward until it snaps into place.
- Close the access door. If the control panel or HP Smart asks, print and scan the alignment page.

Is the 7200e the same printer as the 7220e I see online?
It is the same design, but not the same ink. TechRadar notes it is called the 7200e in the US and the 7220e in the UK, and the UK and European models take HP 303 cartridges. HP 303 and HP 64 are not interchangeable, so buy by the number on your current cartridge.
Can it send a fax?
Not over a phone line. It has no fax modem; faxing is only available through the HP Smart app's mobile fax feature.
Why does a new cartridge say it is not making contact?
Owners report "cartridge not making contact" errors after a swap. Remove the cartridge, check that all the tape is off, wipe the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth and reseat it until it snaps in. A cartridge with a non-HP chip can also be refused by dynamic security, and any non-HP cartridge is refused if HP+ is on.
Why do my prints show light or spotty areas after a few days off?
Some owners who print infrequently report patchy prints. The print head is built into each cartridge, so running Clean Printheads from HP Smart or the printer's Tools menu usually clears it; if one or two cleanings do not, the cartridge itself is the likely cause.
