Wondering whether non-Brother toner is safe in this printer? Our compatible vs OEM Brother guide covers warranty and cost per page.

What Does HL-L8260CDW Toner Cost per Page?

On November 2, 2026, Brother USA listed the TN433BK at $103.49 and Quill at $126.99, while 4inkjets had it at $88.99 and the TN433 colors at $138.99 to $156.99: about 2¢ to 2.8¢ a page for black and 3.5¢ to 3.9¢ per color. Our compatible TN433BK is $49.95 (about 1.1¢ a page) and our TN433 colors are $59.95 each (about 1.5¢). A full-color page using all four works out to roughly 5.6¢ with ours versus about 13¢ with Brother's at 4inkjets' prices.

Will Compatible Toner Work?

Yes. We know of no Brother firmware that blocks compatible TN431 or TN433 cartridges in the HL-L8260CDW, and Brother's own support pages address third-party supplies rather than locking them out. Brother does say it does not recommend non-Brother toner and that its warranty does not cover damage caused by it. If a "Replace Toner" message stays on after a swap, reseat the cartridge firmly in the drum unit and close the front cover all the way.

How Do I Replace the Toner in the HL-L8260CDW?

  1. Press the front cover release button and open the front cover.
  2. Hold the green handle and pull the drum unit out of the printer until it stops.
  3. Hold the handle of the empty toner cartridge, push it forward slightly to unlock it, and lift it out of the drum unit.
  4. Unpack the new TN433 or TN431, shake it gently side to side a few times, and remove the protective cover.
  5. Insert the new cartridge into the matching color slot of the drum unit until it locks.
  6. Clean that color's corona wire by sliding its green tab left and right a few times, then return the tab to its home position.
  7. Push the drum unit back in and close the front cover.

These are the standard steps for this type of printer. If your model's door label shows a different order, follow the label.

Which Other Printers Use TN431 and TN433?

Brother lists the TN431 and TN433 for the HL-L8260CDW, HL-L8360CDW and HL-L8360CDWT, and the MFC-L8610CDW, MFC-L8895CDW and MFC-L8900CDW. All of these share the DR431CL drum. Only the HL-L8360CDW, MFC-L8900CDW and their bigger siblings are also listed for the super-high-yield TN436.

What HL-L8260CDW owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, manufacturer support pages and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Will the TN436 super-high-yield toner fit?

Brother does not list it. Its TN436 pages name the HL-L8360CDW, HL-L9310CDW, MFC-L8900CDW and similar models, but not the HL-L8260CDW, so stick with TN431 or TN433.

I mostly print in black. How do I stop wasting color toner?

Set the printer driver's Color/Mono option to Mono for everyday jobs. Brother's support site has an article on exactly this question; if color levels still drop on black-only work, check that the application itself is not sending the file as color.

What else wears out besides toner?

The DR431CL drum (about 30,000 pages), the BU330CL belt unit and the WT320CL waste toner box (about 50,000 pages each). After a new drum or belt, reset that part's counter from the printer's menu so the warning clears.

Why does it lose its Wi-Fi or AirPrint connection?

Wi-Fi drop-outs are the most common complaint in owner reviews. A fixed IP address, current firmware or the Gigabit Ethernet port usually settles it.

HL-L8260CDW quirks worth knowing

  • PC Pro found it slow to deliver the first page, especially in color, though fast once it is running.
  • It is print-only: no scanner, copier or fax, and the control panel is a basic LCD with buttons rather than a touchscreen.
  • Owners report envelope wrinkles and multipurpose-tray jams more often than main-tray problems.
  • Photos come out posterized, per PC Pro; text and business graphics are its strength.
