What Toner Does the Brother MFC-L2740DW Use?

Quick answer: The Brother MFC-L2740DW uses TN630 (standard, about 1,200 pages) or TN660 (high yield, about 2,600 pages) black toner, and a separate DR630 drum unit rated at about 12,000 pages.

The newer TN730 and TN760 do not fit; they belong to the MFC-L2710DW and MFC-L2750DW generation. Castle Ink sells a compatible TN660 and a compatible DR630 drum.

What Does MFC-L2740DW Toner Cost per Page?

On November 2, 2026, Staples listed Brother's TN660 at $71.49 and the TN630 at $48.79, and Quill also listed the TN660 at $71.49: about 2.7¢ and 4.1¢ a page. Our compatible TN660 is $24.95, about 1¢ a page. The drum adds a little: Staples' DR630 is $112.79 (about 0.9¢ a page over 12,000 pages), and our DR630 is $34.95 (about 0.3¢).

Will Compatible Toner Work?

Yes. The TN630 and TN660 have no chip; the printer recognizes a fresh cartridge through a small reset gear on the side of the cartridge, and compatible cartridges carry the same gear. Brother says it does not recommend non-Brother supplies and that its warranty does not cover damage they cause, but compatible TN660 cartridges are a common way to run this printer. If a "Replace Toner" message stays on after a swap, take the toner out of the drum, reseat it until the green lever lifts, and close the front cover firmly.

How Do I Replace the Toner in the MFC-L2740DW?

  1. Leave the printer on for about 10 minutes after printing so the inside can cool, then open the front cover.
  2. Pull out the drum and toner assembly by its handle.
  3. Push down the green lock lever on the drum and lift the toner cartridge out.
  4. Unpack the new TN660 or TN630, rock it gently side to side a few times, and pull off the protective cover.
  5. Push the new cartridge into the drum until it locks; the green lever lifts by itself.
  6. Clean the corona wire by sliding the green tab on the drum left and right a few times, then return it to its home position.
  7. Slide the assembly back into the printer and close the front cover.

When you replace the drum itself, reset the drum counter afterward; our Brother drum reset guide walks through it.

Which Other Printers Use TN630 and TN660?

The same toner and DR630 drum fit the HL-L2300D, HL-L2320D, HL-L2340DW, HL-L2360DW and HL-L2380DW, the DCP-L2520DW and DCP-L2540DW, and the MFC-L2680W, MFC-L2685DW, MFC-L2700DW, MFC-L2705DW, MFC-L2707DW and MFC-L2720DW. Our TN660 explainer has the full list.

What MFC-L2740DW owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, manufacturer support pages and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Is the drum part of the toner cartridge?

No. The DR630 drum is a separate unit that holds the toner cartridge. You replace the toner several times (about every 2,600 pages with a TN660) before the drum is due at about 12,000 pages.

How many pages does the toner in the box print?

About 700. Brother ships the MFC-L2740DW with a reduced-capacity starter cartridge, so the first replacement comes sooner than the TN660 rating suggests.

Why does my printer keep dropping off Wi-Fi?

This is the most common owner complaint. Updating the firmware, giving the printer a fixed IP address (a DHCP reservation in your router) and power-cycling the router usually helps; if it keeps happening, the Ethernet port is the dependable fix.

I bought an MFC-L2740DW outside the US. Does it take TN660?

Not necessarily. UK and European versions of the MFC-L2740DW use TN-2310 and TN-2320 toner with a DR-2300 drum. Buy by the numbers printed on your existing cartridge.

MFC-L2740DW quirks worth knowing

  • The toner and drum are separate, so budget for a DR630 roughly every 12,000 pages.
  • TechRadar found the 2.7-inch touchscreen small and fiddly, and owners describe some menus (like scan-to-email setup) as hard to find.
  • The 35-page document feeder can scan both sides of a page in one pass, which is uncommon at this size.
  • It is discontinued; replacement toner and drums remain easy to find because the TN660 family covers many Brother models.
