What Ink Does the HP ENVY Photo 7975 Use?
Last Updated:Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide described the ENVY Photo 7975 as a discontinued model with fax and an SD card slot. It is a current model, launched in October 2025, and it has no fax and no memory-card slot. The ink, HP 64 and 64XL, was right.
Quick answer: the HP ENVY Photo 7975 uses HP 64 ink — a pigment black and a dye tri-color. The high-yield versions are HP 64XL, and on a photo printer they are not optional so much as essential.
Do not confuse HP 64 with HP 65 or HP 67. All three are two-cartridge families from adjacent HP generations, and none of them interchange.

The jump from standard to XL is unusually large here — three times the black pages and about two and a half times the color. On a machine people buy specifically to print photographs, that difference compounds fast.
Why XL matters more on a photo printer
Page yields are quoted for text at 5% coverage. A full-bleed 4×6 photo uses far more ink than a page of text. If you bought this printer to print photos, assume your real-world yield will be a fraction of the quoted figure, and buy the largest cartridge available.

About the HP ENVY Photo 7975
The ENVY Photo 7975 is a home all-in-one built with photo output in mind: print, scan and copy (no fax), automatic duplex, a 35-sheet ADF, a 2.7-inch tilting touchscreen and a dedicated photo tray for 4×6, 5×5 and 5×7 media. There is no memory-card slot.
HP rates it at up to 15 ppm black and 10 ppm color for documents; photos take considerably longer, which is normal for the class. Connectivity is dual-band Wi-Fi and one USB 2.0 port. There is no Ethernet.
It is a current model. HP launched it in October 2025 as the U.S. version of its ENVY Photo 7900 series, and it is still sold new. HP says it uses dynamic security to block cartridges with non-HP chips, and firmware updates can block cartridges that worked before, so buy cartridges that keep the original HP chip.

Photos come out dull or with a color cast

Photo tray not picking up paper
The photo tray needs the paper pushed fully forward until it stops, and the tray itself latched into the forward position. A single sheet loaded loosely will not feed.
Streaks through photos only
Run one printhead cleaning cycle, then print a photo test page rather than a text page — text will look fine long after photo output has started to band.

ENVY Photo 7975 quirks worth knowing
- The 7975 is the U.S. model of HP's ENVY Photo 7900 series, announced October 2, 2025. HP's own box-contents list calls it the "HP Envy Photo 7900" (product B63K3A), which confuses some buyers looking for supplies.
- It is not an "e" model, so there is no HP+ lock. It still ships with a 3-month Instant Ink trial, and HP dynamic security still applies, so stick to cartridges that carry an HP chip.
- HP's "AI-enabled" print features (auto formatting, removing unwanted content) only work on Windows 11, in English, with U.S. setup, on a printer bought after July 31, 2025.
- Automatic two-sided printing works for photos as well as documents, and borderless printing goes all the way up to letter size (8.5 x 11 in).
