What Ink Does the HP ENVY Photo 7858 Use?

Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said compatible HP 64XL cartridges work normally because the 7858 is not an HP+ printer. The 7858 has HP dynamic security, which blocks cartridges with non-HP chips whether or not HP+ is involved. It also said HP had discontinued the 7858, which we could not confirm.

Quick answer: The HP ENVY Photo 7858 uses HP 64 (standard) or HP 64XL (high-yield) black and tri-color ink cartridges — not HP 67, which is the most common mix-up on this model. It Is HP 64, Not HP 67

This trips people up constantly, because most HP ENVY models in the 6000 and 6400 series do use HP 67. This one does not. There is also no HP 64XXL — HP's 64 line stops at XL, so anything sold as "64XXL" is a third-party product.

The jump from standard to XL is unusually good value here: 600 pages against 200 for black, for well under three times the price. There is almost no case for buying standard HP 64 except as an emergency stopgap.

One thing to know about tri-color cartridges: cyan, magenta and yellow share a single housing. When any one color runs out the whole cartridge is finished, even with ink left in the other two. It is the main reason cost per page on this class of printer looks worse than the sticker price suggests.

Is the ENVY Photo 7858 Discontinued?

It is hard to find new. Costco listed the 7858 at $169.97 as recently as September 2026, but it was out of stock at every warehouse we could track. HP 64 and 64XL cartridges remain easy to find, because they also fit the ENVY Photo 6200, 7100 and 7800 series and the ENVY Inspire 7200e and 7900e.

Can it fax, and can I plug it into my network with a cable?

Yes to both. The 7858 prints, copies, scans and faxes, and it connects by dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet or USB.

Will it scan a stack of pages?

Yes. It has a 35-sheet document feeder on top of the flatbed. We could not confirm that it scans both sides of a page automatically.

Can I print photos without swapping out the paper in the main tray?

Yes. The 7855/7858 design has a separate 5x7 photo tray next to the main tray, and it prints borderless up to letter size.

Why is color printing so slow?

Color graphics are its weak spot. Tom's Guide measured about 1.4 pages per minute for color graphics on the identical ENVY Photo 7855. HP's rated speed for standard documents is 15 pages per minute black and 10 color.

How much should it print each month?

HP rates this series for up to 1,000 pages a month and recommends 300 to 400.

ENVY Photo 7858 quirks worth knowing

  • The 7858 is the Costco version of the ENVY Photo 7855, so reviews and specs for the 7855 apply to it.
  • A document feeder, fax, Ethernet and an SD card slot are unusual on an ENVY photo printer. Most ENVY models skip at least the fax and Ethernet.
  • The main tray holds only 125 sheets and the output tray 25. Two-sided printing is automatic.
  • Controls are touchscreen only (2.65-inch), with no physical function buttons, and Tom's Guide found the scanner lid hinges flimsy on the 7855.

Owners reported compatible HP 64 cartridges failing after firmware updates in 2019. Remanufactured cartridges that keep the original HP chip, like ours, are the ones that keep working, and turning off automatic firmware updates is a sensible precaution.

Why does the color cartridge die when only one color is empty?
The three colors share one housing, so the cartridge is finished when any single color runs out. On a photo printer that usually means magenta.
