What Toner Does the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fn Use?

Quick answer: The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fn uses the HP 83A (CF283A) black toner cartridge, rated at about 1,500 pages. HP builds the drum into the cartridge, so it is the only supply you need to buy.

The high-yield 83X (CF283X) is not listed for the M127fn; HP lists it only for the M201 and M225 series. The M127fn is the fax model of the M125/M127 family, with a 35-sheet document feeder and wired Ethernet but no Wi-Fi. Castle Ink sells a compatible 83A.

What Does M127fn Toner Cost per Page?

On October 30, 2026, Staples listed HP's 83A at $99.99, about 6.7¢ a page. Our compatible 83A is $37.95, about 2.5¢ a page for the same 1,500-page rating, and each one comes with a new drum.

Will Compatible Toner Work?

Yes. The M127fn dates from 2013, before HP added dynamic-security firmware to its LaserJets, and compatible 83A cartridges are widely used in it. If the printer shows a supply memory error after a cartridge change, the chip is usually not touching the contacts: turn the printer off, remove any leftover orange packing, wipe the cartridge contacts, and reseat the cartridge firmly.

How Do I Replace the Toner in the M127fn?

  1. Raise the scanner unit, which carries the document feeder, until it holds itself up.
  2. Open the top cover underneath it.
  3. Lift the used 83A out by its handle.
  4. Take the new cartridge out of its bag and rock it gently a few times to loosen the toner. Keep your fingers off the drum roller.
  5. Bend the tab on the left end of the cartridge until it breaks loose, then pull out the sealing tape.
  6. Slide the cartridge down the guides until it drops into place.
  7. Close the top cover and lower the scanner unit.

The cartridge that came in the box is an introductory one rated at about 700 pages, so the first change comes sooner than later ones.

Which Other Printers Use HP 83A?

The LaserJet Pro MFP M125a, M125nw, M125rnw, M126 series, M127fw, M127fs and M128 series, plus the LaserJet Pro M201n, M201dw and MFP M225dn and M225dw, all take the 83A. Of these, only the M201 and M225 are also listed for the 83X.

What M127fn owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, manufacturer support communities and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Can I print to it over Wi-Fi?

Not directly; the M127fn has no wireless radio. Plug it into your router with an Ethernet cable and any computer or phone on the same network can print to it, including through Apple AirPrint and HP ePrint, which HP lists for this model. If you want built-in Wi-Fi, the M127fw is the wireless version.

Faxes will not send or receive. Where do I start?

Plug an ordinary corded phone into the same wall jack and make sure it gets a dial tone and can call out. If the phone fails too, the problem is the line. If it works, print the fax error report from the printer and follow HP's M127 fax troubleshooting steps.

Why are my photocopies too dark?

The text copy mode tends to darken mixed pages. Switching the copy optimization from Text to Mixed fixed it in Expert Reviews' testing, and Lighter/Darker is in the copy menu.

The document feeder says it is jammed, but it is empty. What helps?

Open the feeder cover, check for small scraps, and wipe the pickup rollers with a damp lint-free cloth. Owners of the M127 series also try a full power reset and a firmware update; when the sensor itself is at fault, the flatbed still works for copies and scans.

M127fn quirks worth knowing

  • It has a 2-line text display with buttons, not a touchscreen, and some owners find it dim and hard to read.
  • The flatbed takes letter-size originals; legal-size pages have to go through the document feeder.
  • Fax memory holds 500 pages, with 100 speed dials and a junk-fax barrier.
  • Two-sided printing is manual only, and paper loads into one 150-sheet tray.
