What Toner Does the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fw Use?

Quick answer: The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fw uses the HP 83A black toner cartridge (CF283A), rated for about 1,500 pages. The drum is built into the cartridge, so it's the only supply you buy. Castle Ink stocks a compatible HP 83A (CF283A) for $37.95.

HP's high-yield 83X (CF283X) is not on the M127fw's compatibility list: HP and CDW list it only for the M201 and M225 series, and an M127fw owner reported it wouldn't fit. Stick with 83A.

Supply HP part no. Approx. yield Castle Ink option
Starter cartridge (in the box) — ~700 pages —
HP 83A black toner CF283A ~1,500 pages Compatible HP 83A
HP 83X high-yield CF283X ~2,200 pages Not listed for the M127fw

Is a Compatible 83A Worth It?

On October 14, 2026, Staples listed the genuine HP 83A at $99.99, about 6.7¢ a page. Our compatible 83A is $37.95, about 2.5¢ a page, for the same 1,500-page rating. Because the drum is part of the cartridge, every new cartridge also gives you a fresh drum.

How Do I Replace the Toner in the HP M127fw?

  1. Lift the scanner assembly.
  2. Open the top cover and lift out the old cartridge.
  3. Rock the new cartridge gently to spread the toner, without touching the shutter or roller.
  4. Bend the tab on the left side until it breaks loose, then pull out the sealing tape.
  5. Slide the cartridge along the tracks until it seats, close the top cover and lower the scanner.

Which Other Printers Use HP 83A?

The M125a, M125nw and M127fn, plus the LaserJet Pro M201dw, M201n and the MFP M225dw and M225dn. The M201 and M225 can also take the 83X.

What M127fw owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Does the 83X fit?

It isn't listed for the M127fw, and an owner who tried one reported it wouldn't fit. Use 83A (CF283A).

Is there a separate drum?

No. The 83A is an all-in-one cartridge with the drum built in.

Does it print two-sided automatically?

No. It prints the first sides, then asks you to reload the stack face-down, top edge first, and press OK.

The document feeder says it's jammed but nothing is there. What helps?

Open the feeder cover, check for scraps or a bent pickup flap, and clean the feeder rollers with a damp lint-free cloth. Owners on HP's forum report false ADF jams with no single fix, so a power reset is worth trying too.

Printing works but scanning stopped. Why?

Usually software. Reinstall HP's full driver or scan through Windows Fax and Scan or HP Smart, and make sure the computer and printer are on the same network.
