The 83X Trap Worth Knowing
The M225dw and M225dn do accept the high-yield CF283X. The closely related M125 and M127 series do not — those printers take CF283A only, and an 83X will not work in them. It is one of the most common mis-purchases in this family, usually made by someone buying for two printers at once.
Is 83X Actually Worth It?
Less obviously than most high-yield toners. CF283X is only about 47% more pages than CF283A, not the usual double or triple. Work out the price per page before you assume the XL is cheaper — on this family it often is not.
Is the M225dw Discontinued?
Yes. HP names the LaserJet MFP M234sdw as the successor, which uses a different toner family.

Frequently Asked Questions
What toner does the HP M225dw use?
HP 83A (CF283A), or the high-yield HP 83X (CF283X).
Will an 83X fit my M127fw as well?
No. The M125/M127 series takes CF283A only. Only the M225/M226 accept the high-yield CF283X.
Is 83X worth the extra?
Only sometimes. It is about 47% more pages, not double, so compare price per page first.

No. The drum is part of the cartridge.
Can I use compatible HP 83A toner?
Yes. Compatible CF283A cartridges work normally in this printer.
