What Toner Does the HP LaserJet M209dw Use?

Quick answer: The HP LaserJet M209dw uses HP 134A toner for standard-yield replacement, or HP 134X for high-yield replacement. Both are black-only cartridges since this is a monochrome printer.

HP LaserJet M209dw Toner at a Glance

Cartridge Type Approx. Page Yield
In-box starter cartridge Black ~700 pages
HP 134A Black, standard yield ~1,700 pages
HP 134X Black, high yield ~2,600 pages

This same toner family (HP 134A/134X) is shared across several related HP LaserJet models, including the M209d, MFP M234dw, MFP M234sdw, and MFP M234sdn, so if you own more than one of these printers, you can standardize on the same cartridges.

Is There Compatible or Third-Party Toner?

As of this writing, Castle Ink doesn't carry a compatible cartridge for the HP 134A/134X family. We'd rather tell you that directly than send you searching for a product we don't actually have. Third-party 134X-compatible cartridges do exist on the market from other sellers, but we can't personally vouch for their quality or chip compatibility, so we'd recommend reading recent reviews carefully before buying from an unfamiliar brand.

How to Replace the Toner Cartridge

  1. Open the front cover of the printer and pull out the used toner cartridge.
  2. Gently rock the new cartridge from side to side 5–6 times to redistribute the toner evenly.
  3. Remove the orange shipping tape and pull the sealing tab straight out of the cartridge.
  4. Slide the new cartridge into the printer until it clicks into place, then close the front cover.
  5. Print a test page to confirm the printer recognizes the new cartridge.

Troubleshooting Tips

If the printer reports a cartridge as empty or invalid before you expect it to, keep in mind that HP's firmware tracks toner life partly by a page counter rather than purely by the toner remaining in the cartridge — this is a known and fairly common complaint with this printer, not a sign that your cartridge is defective. If you're having trouble with a new cartridge not being recognized at all, remove it, check that the sealing tab was fully removed, and reseat it firmly.

FAQ

Can I use HP 134A and HP 134X interchangeably?
Yes, both fit the same printer. The 134X simply holds more toner and costs more per cartridge, but less per page.

Does this printer support color toner?
No. The M209dw is a monochrome printer and only uses black toner.

Bottom Line

The HP LaserJet M209dw runs on HP 134A (standard) or HP 134X (high yield) black toner. We're not currently able to offer a compatible alternative for this cartridge family, so your main options are genuine HP toner or a carefully vetted third-party brand.
