What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 8122e Use?

Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet Pro 8122e uses HP 923 ink in the US and Canada: four individual pigment cartridges in black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The high-yield tier is HP 923e, which HP calls EvoMore, not 923XL; there is no HP 923XL.

HP's North American cartridge pages list this printer as the "HP OfficeJet 8122e" (405U5A), which is why many owners search for it without the "Pro." In Europe and the UK the OfficeJet Pro 8122e (405U3B) takes HP 924/924e instead, and cartridges are region-coded. HP 910 and 962 belong to older OfficeJet Pro generations and do not fit. Castle Ink sells remanufactured HP 923 in all four colors with an OEM chip, plus a 4-pack.

HP+ warning: the "e" means this printer was offered HP+ at setup. If yours was enrolled in HP+, HP requires Original HP cartridges for the life of the printer, and non-HP or remanufactured cartridges, including ours, will be rejected. Check before you buy.

What Does OfficeJet Pro 8122e Ink Cost per Page?

On October 30, 2026, 4inkjets listed HP's 923 Black at $41.99 (about 8.4¢ a page) and each 923 color at $22.99 (about 5.7¢ a page), with the 923e Black at $85.99 (about 8.6¢) and each 923e color at $44.99 (about 5.6¢). Our remanufactured HP 923 Black is $19.95 (about 4¢ a page) and each color is $15.99 (about 4¢ a page), or $59.99 for the 4-pack.

Will Remanufactured Ink Work?

It depends on HP+. If you declined HP+ at setup, cartridges with a new or reused HP chip work, and ours are remanufactured HP 923 shells with an OEM chip, so the printer reads them as HP cartridges. If you accepted HP+, HP requires Original HP cartridges for the life of the printer, the printer must stay connected to the internet, and non-HP or remanufactured cartridges will be rejected; HP+ cannot be switched off later. Separately, HP says the OfficeJet Pro 8125e, from the same series, uses dynamic security, firmware that blocks cartridges with a non-HP chip whether or not HP+ is on. A later firmware update can change which chips are accepted, which is why we use OEM chips.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP OfficeJet Pro 8122e?

  1. Turn the printer on and open the front cartridge access door.
  2. Wait for the carriage to move into the access position and stop.
  3. Press the front of the empty cartridge to release it, then pull it out of its slot.
  4. Unpack the new cartridge without touching the copper contacts.
  5. Slide it into the slot that matches its color until it clicks into place.
  6. Close the access door and follow any prompts on the touchscreen.

These are the standard steps for this type of printer. If your model's door label shows a different order, follow the label.

Which Other Printers Use HP 923?

The rest of the OfficeJet Pro 8120e and 8130e series take HP 923 and 923e in the US, including the OfficeJet Pro 8120e, 8125e, 8128e, 8130e, 8135e, 8138e and 8139e and the non-HP+ OfficeJet Pro 8125. Our OfficeJet Pro 8125e guide covers the 8122e's closest sibling.

What OfficeJet Pro 8122e owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer and its 8120e-series siblings on retailer pages, HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Is the "HP OfficeJet 8122e" a different printer from the OfficeJet Pro 8122e?

For ink, no. HP's North American 923 cartridge pages list the HP OfficeJet 8122e (405U5A), and retailers sell the same machine as the OfficeJet Pro 8122e. Both take HP 923 and 923e in the US and Canada. Only the European and UK model (405U3B) uses HP 924.

Was my printer enrolled in HP+?

This matters more than anything else on this page. If you accepted HP+ during setup, only Original HP cartridges will work, and third-party or remanufactured HP 923 will be rejected. If you declined it, cartridges with a new or reused HP chip, like ours, work. Cartridges with a non-HP chip are blocked by dynamic security either way.

Can the document feeder scan both sides?

No. Expert Reviews notes the 35-sheet feeder is single-sided, so two-sided originals must be flipped by hand. Printing is automatically two-sided.

Why is the paper tray so fiddly?

Sam's Club reviewers of the OfficeJet Pro 8128, a sibling in the same series, say the paper-size guides sit on the bottom of the 225-sheet tray, so the tray has to come all the way out to adjust them, and mis-set guides cause jams.

OfficeJet Pro 8122e quirks worth knowing

  • Macworld measured about 18 pages a minute in black and 7 in color, and put HP's running costs at about 4¢ a mono page and 14.7¢ a color page with Original HP 923.
  • Expert Reviews found photo prints looked washed out and color copies didn't closely match originals; it is a document printer first.
  • Instant Ink cartridges are tied to the subscription and can stop working after you cancel; retail cartridges are not.
  • Cartridges are region-coded: a US or Canadian printer will not accept European HP 924 cartridges, and vice versa.
