What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 8125e Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: the HP OfficeJet Pro 8125e uses HP 923 ink — four individual pigment cartridges. The high-yield tier is HP 923e, which HP calls EvoMore, not 923XL. There is no such thing as an HP 923XL, and any listing selling you one is relabelling something else.
Two other wrong answers circulate for this printer. HP 924/924e and HP 925/925e are the same cartridges under regional part numbering — HP 924 is the European version, and HP 925 parts are listed for other regional versions of this printer. Cartridges are region-coded, and a US machine will not take them. HP 910/910XL belongs to the older OfficeJet Pro 8025e generation.

Those are HP's own ISO figures. Note that the 923e high-yield roughly doubles the black and doubles the colors — a bigger jump than most HP families offer, which makes it the obvious choice if you print steadily.

Four individual cartridges: why it matters
This printer uses one cartridge per color rather than a combined tri-color. That is a real advantage: when you run out of magenta, you replace magenta, not a three-color block with usable cyan and yellow still in it. Over a year of mixed printing it is one of the biggest single savings a printer design can offer.
All four are pigment inks, which is why output on plain paper looks crisp and resists smudging and highlighter better than dye-based ink. It is also why this class of machine suits documents rather than glossy photos.
About the HP OfficeJet Pro 8125e
The OfficeJet Pro 8125e is a small-office all-in-one: print, scan, copy, automatic duplex printing, a 35-sheet ADF and a 225-sheet input tray. It is one of the better-value four-cartridge office machines HP has made.
Rated at roughly 20 ppm black and 10 ppm color, with dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet and a color touchscreen. Worth knowing: HP sells a non-"e" OfficeJet Pro 8125 alongside this one. The "e" marks the HP+ version, and the plain 8125 (C2VJ4A) is sold as a separate SKU. Both take HP 923 cartridges, but check the label on yours before assuming the HP+ rules on this page apply.
Common problems on this model
"Cartridge problem" after a firmware update
HP says this printer uses dynamic security to block cartridges with a non-HP chip, whether or not HP+ is on. Cartridges with a new or reused HP chip, like our HP 923, are the ones that work. Banding or misaligned output
Run a printhead alignment from the printer's tools menu, not just a cleaning. On a four-cartridge pigment machine, misalignment shows up as visible banding far more often than clogging does.
Slow first page
Pigment ink needs the printhead primed, so the first page after sleep is always slowest. Turning off deep sleep in the printer settings helps, at the cost of a little standby power.

923e is HP's EvoMore line. It is rated for about 1,000 pages in black and 800 per color, against about 500 and 400 for the standard 923.
I cancelled Instant Ink and my cartridges stopped working. Why?
Instant Ink cartridges are tied to the subscription. Some owners of HP+-activated 8125e printers report that after cancelling, the cartridges they had stopped working until they were replaced with retail cartridges.
Can the document feeder scan both sides automatically?
No. The 35-sheet feeder is single-sided, so two-sided originals have to be flipped by hand. Printing is automatically two-sided.
Can I plug it into my router with a cable?
Yes. HP lists an Ethernet port alongside dual-band Wi-Fi and USB.
It reports a paper jam, but there is no paper stuck. What now?
Clear the paper path first. On some fairly new units, owners have traced false jam and cartridge errors to a failing printhead or carriage, so if the error keeps coming back, contact HP while the printer is under warranty.

- Scans through the document feeder top out at 300 dpi. Use the flatbed when you need up to 1200 dpi.
- The Wi-Fi is dual-band (2.4 and 5 GHz), and HP describes it as self-healing: the printer tries to reconnect on its own after a dropout.
- Draft mode runs at up to 29 pages per minute in black and 25 in color, against the 20 and 10 ppm ISO ratings.
- Europe gets the same printer with HP 924/924e cartridges (black 4K0U6NE, for example). Cartridges are region-coded, so buy for the region where the printer was sold.

Was my 8125e enrolled in HP plus?
