What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 8125e Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: the HP OfficeJet Pro 8125e uses HP 923 ink — four individual pigment cartridges. The high-yield tier is spelled HP 923e, not 923XL. There is no such thing as an HP 923XL, and any listing selling you one is relabelling something else.
Two other wrong answers circulate for this printer. HP 918/918e is the European part numbering for the same hardware and will not be what a US machine expects. HP 910/910XL belongs to the older OfficeJet Pro 8025e generation.

Those are HP's own ISO figures. Note that the 923e high-yield roughly doubles the black and doubles the colors — a bigger jump than most HP families offer, which makes it the obvious choice if you print steadily.
Four individual cartridges: why it matters
This printer uses one cartridge per color rather than a combined tri-color. That is a real advantage: when you run out of magenta, you replace magenta, not a three-color block with usable cyan and yellow still in it. Over a year of mixed printing it is one of the biggest single savings a printer design can offer.
All four are pigment inks, which is why output on plain paper looks crisp and resists smudging and highlighter better than dye-based ink. It is also why this class of machine suits documents rather than glossy photos.

Rated at roughly 20 ppm black and 10 ppm color, with dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet and a colour touchscreen. Worth knowing: HP has renamed this model — it is now sold simply as the OfficeJet Pro 8125, with identical cartridges. If you own the "e", nothing about your ink changes.

Banding or misaligned output
Run a printhead alignment from the printer's tools menu, not just a cleaning. On a four-cartridge pigment machine, misalignment shows up as visible banding far more often than clogging does.
Slow first page
Pigment ink needs the printhead primed, so the first page after sleep is always slowest. Turning off deep sleep in the printer settings helps, at the cost of a little standby power.
