What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: the HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e uses HP 923 ink — four individual pigment cartridges. The high-yield tier is HP 923e, which HP calls EvoMore, not 923XL. There is no such thing as an HP 923XL, and any listing selling you one is relabelling something else.
Two other wrong answers circulate for this printer. HP 924/924e and HP 925/925e are the same cartridges under regional part numbering — They are sold for other regions. HP cartridges are region-coded, and a US machine will not take them. HP 910/910XL belongs to the older OfficeJet Pro 8025e generation.

Those are HP's own ISO figures. Note that the 923e high-yield roughly doubles the black and doubles the colors — a bigger jump than most HP families offer, which makes it the obvious choice if you print steadily.

Four individual cartridges: why it matters
This printer uses one cartridge per color rather than a combined tri-color. That is a real advantage: when you run out of magenta, you replace magenta, not a three-color block with usable cyan and yellow still in it. Over a year of mixed printing it is one of the biggest single savings a printer design can offer.
All four are pigment inks, which is why output on plain paper looks crisp and resists smudging and highlighter better than dye-based ink. It is also why this class of machine suits documents rather than glossy photos.
About the HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e
The OfficeJet Pro 8135e shares its core hardware with the cheaper 8125e: HP lists the same 2.7-inch touchscreen, 20/10 ppm ISO speed, 35-sheet document feeder, 225-sheet tray and 800-page recommended monthly volume for both, and both use the four-cartridge HP 923 ink system.
Roughly 20 ppm black and 10 ppm color, automatic duplex printing, a 35-sheet ADF, dual-band Wi-Fi and Ethernet. HP also sells a non-"e" OfficeJet Pro 8135 alongside it . HP's 8135e page now says the 8135e "is now the HP OfficeJet Pro 8135". Both take HP 923 cartridges, but check the label on yours before assuming the HP+ rules on this page apply.
Common problems on this model
"Cartridge problem" after a firmware update
HP lists the 8135e as a dynamic-security printer, meant to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip, whether or not HP+ is on. A firmware update can block cartridges with a non-HP chip. Cartridges that reuse the original HP chip, like our HP 923, are the ones that work. Banding or misaligned output
Run a printhead alignment from the printer's tools menu, not just a cleaning. On a four-cartridge pigment machine, misalignment shows up as visible banding far more often than clogging does.
Slow first page
Pigment ink needs the printhead primed, so the first page after sleep is always slowest. Turning off deep sleep in the printer settings helps, at the cost of a little standby power.

Can the document feeder scan both sides of a page?
No. The 35-sheet feeder is single-sided, so two-sided originals have to be flipped by hand. Printing is automatically two-sided.
What is the largest paper it takes?
Legal size (8.5 x 14 in), loaded in the 225-sheet main tray.
Which other printers take the same cartridges?
The whole OfficeJet Pro 8120–8139 family, including the 8122e, 8125e, 8130e, 8132e, 8134e, 8138e and 8139e.
It says it's out of paper after the first job, but the tray is full.
An owner of the 8139e, which is the same platform, reported this on HP's support forum. Restarting both the computer and the printer cleared it.
OfficeJet Pro 8135e quirks worth knowing
- HP is dropping the "e": its 8135e product page now says the 8135e "is now the HP OfficeJet Pro 8135". The cartridges don't change.
- Besides the USB port for your computer, it has a USB host port, and the fax is color with a 100-page memory.
- RTINGS treats it as the replacement for the OfficeJet Pro 8025e. Leftover HP 910 cartridges from that printer will not fit.
- HP rates it for up to 20,000 pages a month but recommends up to 800.

No. The high-yield tier is HP 923e. Listings advertising "923XL" are using a part number that does not exist.

No. HP 910 and 910XL belong to the OfficeJet Pro 8025e and 8035e generation.
Is the 8135e ink different from the 8125e?
No. Both use HP 923 standard and HP 923e high-yield, in the same four positions.
My 8135e says the cartridge is not intended for this printer. Why?
Most often a region-mismatched HP 924e or 925e cartridge bought by mistake, or a contact that needs cleaning. Check the part number on the cartridge against 4K0T3LN, 4K0T0LN, 4K0T1LN or 4K0T2LN.
Was my 8135e enrolled in HP plus?
This matters more than anything else on this page. If you accepted HP+ during setup, HP requires Original HP cartridges for the life of the printer, and third-party HP 923 will not work. If you declined it, cartridges with a new or reused HP chip work, including ours. Cartridges with a non-HP chip are blocked by HP dynamic security either way.
