What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 8130e Use?
Last Updated:Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said the 8130e takes only HP 923 and called HP 924 a wrong answer. HP 923 is right for U.S. printers in the 8130e series (the 8135e, 8138e and 8139e), but the model sold as the 8130e in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore takes HP 924. It also said compatible cartridges work normally if you declined HP+. HP's dynamic security blocks cartridges with non-HP chips either way.
Quick answer: it depends on where the printer was sold. In the U.S., HP's OfficeJet Pro 8130e series (the 8135e, 8138e and 8139e) takes HP 923 ink: four individual pigment cartridges. The printer sold as the 8130e in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore (product number 40Q48B) takes HP 924. For U.S. printers the high-yield tier is HP 923e, which HP calls EvoMore, not 923XL. There is no such thing as an HP 923XL, and any listing selling you one is relabelling something else.
HP cartridges are region-coded, so buy for the country where the printer was sold. A U.S. machine will not take HP 924. HP 910/910XL belongs to the older OfficeJet Pro 8025e generation.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8130e series ink (U.S.) at a glance
| Cartridge | Family | Part Number | Approx. Yield |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black (standard) | HP 923 | 4K0T3LN | ~500 pages |
| Cyan (standard) | HP 923 | 4K0T0LN | ~400 pages |
| Magenta (standard) | HP 923 | 4K0T1LN | ~400 pages |
| Yellow (standard) | HP 923 | 4K0T2LN | ~400 pages |
| Black (high yield) | HP 923e | 4K0T7LN | ~1,000 pages |
| Cyan (high yield) | HP 923e | 4K0T4LN | ~800 pages |
| Magenta (high yield) | HP 923e | 4K0T5LN | ~800 pages |
| Yellow (high yield) | HP 923e | 4K0T6LN | ~800 pages |
Those are HP's own ISO figures. Note that the 923e high-yield roughly doubles the black and doubles the colors — a bigger jump than most HP families offer, which makes it the obvious choice if you print steadily.
We sell remanufactured HP 923 in all four colors. They keep their original HP chips, which is what this printer is built to accept. We don't sell 923e or HP 924.
If your 8130e was bought in Australia, New Zealand or Singapore, HP's datasheet lists HP 924 instead: 4K0U6NA black (about 500 pages) and 4K0U3NA cyan, 4K0U4NA magenta and 4K0U5NA yellow (about 400 pages each), also sold as a 6C3Z0NA four-pack.
Four individual cartridges: why it matters
This printer uses one cartridge per color rather than a combined tri-color. That is a real advantage: when you run out of magenta, you replace magenta, not a three-color block with usable cyan and yellow still in it. Over a year of mixed printing it is one of the biggest single savings a printer design can offer.
All four are pigment inks, which is why output on plain paper looks crisp and resists smudging and highlighter better than dye-based ink. It is also why this class of machine suits documents rather than glossy photos.
About the HP OfficeJet Pro 8130e
The OfficeJet Pro 8130e is a small-office all-in-one. In the U.S., HP uses "8130e series" for the 8135e, 8138e and 8139e, which run four individual HP 923 pigment cartridges. The model sold as the 8130e in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore is the same design with HP 924 cartridges.
Expect around 20 ppm black and 10 ppm color, automatic duplex printing, an ADF for multi-page scanning and copying, plus dual-band Wi-Fi and Ethernet. In the U.S., HP also sells non-e versions (8135, 8138 and 8139). They take the same cartridges, and HP's dynamic security applies to them too.
Common problems on this model
"Cartridge problem" after a firmware update
HP lists this series as a dynamic-security printer, meant to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip, whether or not HP+ is on. A firmware update can block cartridges with a non-HP chip that worked before. Cartridges that reuse the original HP chip, like our remanufactured HP 923, are the safer choice. Reseat the cartridge and power-cycle first — unplug at the wall for 60 seconds. If it persists, our guide to firmware updates and third-party ink explains what changed and how to stop the next one.
Banding or misaligned output
Run a printhead alignment from the printer's tools menu, not just a cleaning. On a four-cartridge pigment machine, misalignment shows up as visible banding far more often than clogging does.
Paper jams
Turn the printer off before you reach inside, and pull paper out slowly in the direction it travels. See our paper jam guide.
What OfficeJet Pro 8130e owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support forum and owner reviews, answered in our words.
HP's support site calls my printer an 8130e, but the box says 8138e. Which is it?
Both. HP groups the 8135e, 8138e and 8139e under the "OfficeJet Pro 8130e series" on its support site, so HP's agents often call them 8130e. In the U.S., all of them take HP 923.
Can the document feeder scan both sides of a page?
No. HP lists a 35-sheet, one-sided feeder. Printing is automatically two-sided, but two-sided originals have to be flipped by hand.
Does it have Ethernet and fax?
Yes. HP lists one Ethernet port, dual-band Wi-Fi, a USB port for a computer, a USB host port and two RJ-11 phone ports for fax.
How much printing is it built for?
HP recommends up to 800 pages a month, with a maximum duty cycle of 20,000 pages.
Why did the first cartridges run out so fast?
The cartridges in the box are setup cartridges. HP's datasheet says they print fewer pages than retail cartridges, because some ink goes into preparing the printer.
OfficeJet Pro 8130e quirks worth knowing
- The model actually sold under the name "OfficeJet Pro 8130e" is product number 40Q48B, an Australia, New Zealand and Singapore model that takes HP 924. In the U.S. you will see the 8135e, 8138e and 8139e instead.
- HP's datasheet says the printer is intended to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip, and that periodic firmware updates may stop cartridges that worked before.
- Wi-Fi is dual-band with what HP calls "self-healing" reconnection, and there is a USB host port as well as the USB port for a computer.
- The output tray holds 60 sheets against a 225-sheet input tray, so empty it during long jobs.
FAQ
What ink does the HP OfficeJet Pro 8130e use?
In the U.S., HP 923 in black, cyan, magenta and yellow, or the high-yield HP 923e equivalents. The 8130e sold in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore takes HP 924. Either way it is four individual cartridges.
Is there an HP 923XL?
No. The high-yield tier is HP 923e. Listings advertising "923XL" are using a part number that does not exist.
Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 8130e use HP 910 ink?
No. HP 910 and 910XL belong to the OfficeJet Pro 8025e and 8035e generation.
Does the OfficeJet Pro 8130e use the same ink as the 8120e?
In the U.S., yes. The 8120e and the 8130e series take HP 923 and HP 923e. Outside the U.S., HP uses other cartridge numbers, such as HP 924 in Australia.
Was my 8130e enrolled in HP plus?
This matters more than anything else on this page. If you accepted HP+ during setup, HP requires Original HP cartridges for the life of the printer, and third-party HP 923 will not work. HP+ can only be chosen during setup. If you declined it, the printer still uses dynamic security, which blocks cartridges with non-HP chips, so only cartridges with a new or reused HP chip are dependable. HP+ printers also need an active internet connection to print. Our guide to printers that do not lock you into OEM ink explains the trade-off.
