What Toner Does the Brother MFC-7360N Use?

Quick answer: The Brother MFC-7360N uses TN420 (standard, about 1,200 pages) or TN450 (high yield, about 2,600 pages) black toner. The toner clips into a separate DR420 drum unit rated at about 12,000 pages.

The look-alike TN330/TN360 and DR360 (older HL-2140 family) and the newer TN630/TN660 and DR630 do not fit. Castle Ink sells a compatible TN450 and DR420.

What Toner Does the Brother MFC-7360N Take?

TN420 Black (standard) TN420 ~1,200 pages Amazon

What Does MFC-7360N Toner Cost per Page?

On October 30, 2026, Staples listed Brother's TN450 at $71.49 (about 2.7¢ a page) and TN420 at $48.79 (about 4.1¢ a page), with the DR420 drum at $104.99 (about 0.9¢ a page); 4inkjets had the TN450 at $70.99 and the DR420 at $112.99. Our compatible TN450 is $34.95 (about 1.3¢ a page) and our DR420 is $41.95 (about 0.35¢ a page), so the all-in cost with the TN450 is roughly 1.7¢ a page, against about 3.6¢ with Brother toner and drum.

Will Compatible Toner Work?

Yes. The TN420 and TN450 have no electronic chip; the MFC-7360N detects a new cartridge with a small reset gear on the side of the cartridge and then counts pages. Compatible TN450 cartridges are the normal way owners run this printer, and there is no firmware lockout to worry about. Brother's manual does say printing stops at Replace Toner "until you install a new, unused original Brother cartridge," which is a counter, not a brand check: a fresh compatible cartridge clears it the same way.

How Do I Replace the Toner in the MFC-7360N?

  1. With the machine on, open the front cover and let it cool for about 10 minutes.
  2. Lift out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly and set it on disposable paper.
  3. Push down the lock lever on the drum unit and pull the old toner cartridge out.
  4. Unpack the new TN420 or TN450, hold it level, gently shake it side to side a few times and remove the protective cover.
  5. Push the cartridge firmly into the drum unit until it locks; the lock lever lifts on its own.
  6. Clean the corona wire by sliding the tab inside the drum left and right several times, then return it to the home position to avoid streaks.
  7. Put the assembly back, close the front cover and do not switch the machine off until the LCD returns to Ready.

When you fit a new DR420, leave the front cover open, press Clear, then press 1 to confirm a new drum; close the cover when the LCD shows Accepted. Do not reset the drum counter after a toner-only change.

Which Other Printers Use TN420, TN450 and DR420?

The HL-2220, HL-2230, HL-2240, HL-2240D, HL-2270DW and HL-2280DW; the DCP-7060D and DCP-7065DN; the MFC-7240, MFC-7360N, MFC-7365DN, MFC-7460DN and MFC-7860DW; and the IntelliFax-2840 and 2940 all take the same toner and drum.

What MFC-7360N owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, manufacturer support pages, technician forums and owner reviews, answered in our words.

It says Replace Toner and stopped printing, but my pages still look fine. Can I keep going?

Yes. Brother built in a setting for this: press Menu, 1, 8 (Replace Toner), choose Continue and press OK. The machine then keeps printing until it shows Toner Ended, and switches back to Stop once you install a new cartridge. Brother does not guarantee print quality in Continue mode, so expect fading near the end.

I installed a new cartridge and it still says Toner Low or Replace Toner. What now?

Take the cartridge out and reseat it firmly in the drum, then refit the assembly. The printer recognizes a new cartridge from the reset gear on its side, so a cartridge whose gear was never set will not clear the warning; contact the seller in that case. Technician forums pass around front-panel codes that reset the toner counter, but Brother does not document them and we have not verified them.

Does it print two-sided or connect over Wi-Fi?

No to both. Two-sided printing is manual only, and connections are USB and wired Ethernet. The MFC-7460DN adds automatic duplex and the MFC-7860DW adds duplex and Wi-Fi, with the same toner.

Will I lose faxes if I switch it off?

Possibly. Faxes held in memory, for example while the machine is in toner Continue mode, are erased on the MFC-7360N when the power switch is turned off, so print them before powering down.

MFC-7360N quirks worth knowing

  • Toner and drum are separate: one DR420 lasts roughly four to five TN450 cartridges, so most changes are toner-only.
  • Trusted Reviews found the LCD low in contrast and the grayscale copies weak, while praising text quality and speed.
  • It has a 35-page document feeder, fax and network scanning, but no front USB port for flash drives.
  • The machine stores up to 400 received faxes in memory when it cannot print them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What toner does the Brother MFC-7360N use?

TN420 (about 1,200 pages) or TN450 (about 2,600 pages) black toner, in a DR420 drum unit (about 12,000 pages).

Does the TN450 fit the MFC-7360N?

Yes. The TN450 is the high-yield version of the TN420 and drops into the same DR420 drum, so it is the better value for most owners.

Do I need a new drum every time I change toner?

No. The DR420 is rated at about 12,000 pages, so you replace it only when the printer shows a drum message, not with each toner.
