What Ink Does the HP Envy 5000 Use?

Quick answer: The HP Envy 5000 series uses HP 63 Black and HP 63 Tri-color ink cartridges, or the high-yield HP 63XL versions for a much better cost-per-page.

HP Envy 5000 ink cartridges - HP 63 and HP 63XL

HP Envy 5000 Ink Cartridges at a Glance

  • HP 63 Black — ~190 pages
  • HP 63 Tri-color — ~165 pages
  • HP 63XL Black (high-yield) — ~480 pages
  • HP 63XL Tri-color (high-yield) — ~330 pages

The HP Envy 5000 series (5010, 5012, 5014, 5020, 5030, 5032, 5034, 5052, 5055, 5070) is a wireless all-in-one designed for home printing, scanning, and copying. Every model in the family takes the same two cartridges — one HP 63 (or 63XL) Black and one HP 63 (or 63XL) Tri-Color.

Standard 63 vs. 63XL: Which Should You Buy?

If you only print a few pages a week, standard HP 63 cartridges will do the job. But if you print regularly, 63XL is almost always cheaper per page — about 2.5x more black ink and 2x more color ink for less than 2x the price. Want the math? See our HP 63 vs HP 63XL comparison.

Save on HP Envy 5000 Ink with Compatible Cartridges

OEM HP 63XL ink can run $40+ per cartridge, which adds up fast. Castle Ink's HP 63XL Compatible Ink Cartridge Set (Black + Tri-Color) matches OEM print quality at a fraction of the price — every cartridge ships same-day from the U.S. and is backed by our satisfaction guarantee.

How to Replace Ink in the HP Envy 5000

  1. Power on the printer and lift the front cover. Wait for the carriage to slide to the access position.
  2. Press down gently on the empty cartridge to release it, then pull it out toward you.
  3. Unwrap the new cartridge and remove the plastic tape — don't touch the gold contacts.
  4. Slide the new cartridge into the matching slot at a slight upward angle and push until it clicks. Black goes in the right slot; Tri-color in the left.
  5. Close the cover and let the printer run an alignment page.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • "Cartridge problem" error: Wipe the gold chip with a lint-free cloth and reseat the cartridge. Power-cycle if needed.
  • Streaks or missing colors: Run print head cleaning from the printer's HP Smart app or Tools menu.
  • "Used or counterfeit cartridge" warning: Tap "OK" — this notice doesn't block printing with quality compatible cartridges.
