What Ink Does the Canon PIXMA MP620 Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The Canon PIXMA MP620 uses five ink tanks: a PGI-220 pigment black for text and CLI-221 black, cyan, magenta and yellow for photos and color. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured PGI-220 Pigment Black, CLI-221 Black, CLI-221 Cyan, CLI-221 Magenta, CLI-221 Yellow and a PGI-220 + CLI-221 6-pack.
It shares these tanks with the PIXMA MP560 and MX870, and with the MP980, which adds a CLI-221 gray. The MP620B takes the same inks. The print head is separate from the tanks, so you only replace the color that runs out.

Discontinued. Canon announced the MP620 in August 2008 at an estimated $149.99 and now lists it as retired, with no support or driver updates. In October 2026, 4inkjets still had original PGI-220 and CLI-221 tanks in stock.

These tanks come in one size only, with no XL. Yields are seller-listed figures from 4inkjets. Our 6-pack includes a CLI-221 gray tank meant for the MP980 and MP990, which the MP620 can't use, but it still costs less than buying the five tanks you need one at a time.
Are PGI-220 and CLI-221 Tanks Worth It?
There's only one size, so the choice is between Canon's tanks and ours. On October 21, 2026, 4inkjets listed Canon's PGI-220 at $20.99 (about 6¢ a page), the CLI-221 cyan and yellow at $20.99 each, and the magenta and black at $18.99 each, all in stock. A color page that draws on cyan, magenta and yellow costs about 12¢ in Canon ink. Our remanufactured tanks are $7.99 each: about 2.3¢ a page for the PGI-220 and about 1.6¢ per color for the cyan, magenta and yellow. The 6-pack is $35.99.
How Do I Replace the Ink in the Canon PIXMA MP620?
- With the printer on, lift the scanning unit until it stays open. The print head holder moves to the replacement position.
- Press the tab on the empty tank and lift it out.
- Unpack the new tank, pull off the orange tape, then twist off the orange cap. Don't squeeze the tank or touch its electrical contacts.
- Put the front of the tank into the print head at a slant, then press down on the top until it clicks into its colored slot. Its ink lamp should light red.
- Close the scanning unit and wait for the printer to finish its startup before printing.
Which Other Printers Use PGI-220 and CLI-221?
The PIXMA iP3600, iP4600 and iP4700; the MP540, MP550, MP560, MP630, MP640 and MP640R; the MP980 and MP990, which also take a CLI-221 gray; and the MX860 and MX870.
What MP620 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer in Canon's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.
What does error B200 mean?
It points to a print head or printer fault. Owners in Canon's community have tried unplugging it, cleaning or soaking the print head and fitting new ink, with mixed results. When the error keeps coming back, most end up replacing the printer, as Canon no longer supports this model.
The paper cassette won't feed.
Trusted Reviews found the front cassette often failed to pick up paper when it held fewer than about 30 sheets. Keep it well filled, or use the rear tray for small jobs.
Wireless setup won't connect.
LaptopMag had to change the printer port's IP address before Wi-Fi worked, and Trusted Reviews notes setup may need a USB cable at first. If it won't join your network, connect by USB to set it up, or use the Ethernet port.
Can I print from a USB flash drive?
Canon says it can scan to a memory card or USB drive, but LaptopMag found it can't print straight from a flash drive. Print from a memory card, your camera over PictBridge, or a computer.
MP620 quirks worth knowing
- Two paper sources: a 150-sheet front cassette and a rear tray, so you can keep plain and photo paper loaded at once.
- Wi-Fi (802.11b/g), Ethernet and USB. Bluetooth needs an optional adapter.
- A 2.5-inch tilting color screen with a scroll wheel, plus memory card slots.
- No document feeder and no automatic two-sided printing.
- Canon rated it at up to 26 pages a minute in black, but Trusted Reviews measured about 5.5 pages a minute on a five-page text test.
