Yields are HP's ISO figures. Each cartridge has its drum built in. HP's M477 datasheet rates the in-box cartridges at about 2,300 pages for black and 1,200 for each color.

Is HP 410X Worth It?

Yes. On October 26, 2026, Staples listed the Original HP 410X Black at $219.99 and the 410X Cyan and Yellow at $294.99 each, about 3.4¢ and 5.9¢ a page. Our compatible 410X cartridges are $59.95 each (about 0.9¢ a page for black and 1.2¢ for each color), or $239.95 for all four. Our 410X black actually costs less than our standard 410A black, so there's no reason to buy the smaller cartridge from us.

Will Compatible 410X Toner Work?

Usually, if two printer settings are right. The firmware has a "Cartridge Policy" that, when set to Authorized HP, rejects non-HP toner, and a "Cartridge Protection" setting that locks a cartridge to one printer. Both live under Supplies settings, and cartridge-seller guides say turning off the Authorized HP policy clears "Unauthorized cartridge" errors. In September 2016 an M477fdw owner reported on HP's forum that non-HP toner stopped working after a firmware update and worked again after rolling the firmware back, so leave automatic updates off. The M477fnw is not an HP+ model.

How Do I Replace the Toner in the HP M477fnw?

  1. Press the button on the left side to open the front door.
  2. Pull out the toner-cartridge drawer by its handle.
  3. Lift the old cartridge out by its handle.
  4. Unpack the new cartridge and remove the orange clip and any straps.
  5. Hold both ends and gently rock it side to side.
  6. Set it in the drawer slot that matches its color label.
  7. Push the drawer closed, then close the front door.

Which Other Printers Use HP 410A and 410X?

HP's datasheets and Quill, Staples and 4inkjets list the Color LaserJet Pro M452dn, M452dw and M452nw, the Color LaserJet Pro MFP M477fdn, M477fdw and M477fnw, and the Staples-only MFP M377dw.

What M477fnw owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, manufacturer support communities and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Is the Staples M377dw the same printer?

Essentially. An HP employee confirmed the M477 firmware works on the M377dw, and both use 410A and 410X.

Does using non-HP toner void the warranty?

No, but HP may charge for repairs it attributes to non-HP cartridges, and the Authorized HP cartridge policy needs to be off.

Why did the first color cartridges run out quickly?

The in-box color cartridges are rated at about 1,200 pages, about half a full 410A.

Does the M477fnw print two-sided automatically?

No. It scans both sides automatically from its document feeder, but two-sided printing is manual; the fdn and fdw have automatic duplex printing.

M477fnw quirks worth knowing

  • Its 50-sheet document feeder scans both sides in one pass, even though printing is one-sided.
  • The 59.F0 transfer-belt sensor error is the family's best-known failure; one owner on HP's forum lost three units to it.
  • Best Buy reviewers mention toner cost, the fax stopping after about a year and a half, and its size and weight.
  • It has a 4.3-inch touchscreen, fax, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi and a walk-up USB port, and prints 28 pages a minute.
