How to Install the CL-261XL

1. Turn the printer on and open the front cover or scanner unit. The cartridge holder moves to the center.
2. Push the old cartridge down until it clicks, then lift it out.
3. Remove the new cartridge from its bag and peel off the protective tape. Do not touch the gold contacts or the nozzles.
4. Slide the cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle (color goes on the left) and push it up until it clicks.
5. Close the cover. Run a nozzle check (and print head alignment if offered) before your first big print job.

Good to Know

PG-260/CL-261 cartridges are a different size from PG-275/CL-276 and PG-245/CL-246, so they won't fit those printers. The TS6420 and TS6420a use 260/261 — not 275/276.

Canon ships these printers with lower-capacity setup cartridges, so the first replacement often seems to last much longer — that's normal.

When any one of the three colors runs out, the whole cartridge needs replacing. Printing everyday documents in grayscale saves the color cartridge.

If the printer shows support code 1686 or a "remaining ink level cannot be detected" message, press and hold Stop for about 5 seconds to keep printing. It only turns off ink-level detection for this cartridge; print quality is not affected.

Does the Canon TS6420 use 261 or 276 color ink?
The PIXMA TS6420 and TS6420a use CL-261. CL-276 will not fit.

Can I replace just one color?
No. Cyan, magenta and yellow share one cartridge, so the whole CL-261XL is replaced when any color runs out.

Will a remanufactured cartridge void my Canon printer warranty?

Will my printer show a message when I install it?
Some Canon printers show a notice that a non-genuine or previously used cartridge is installed. Select OK or Continue and print as usual. If it isn't recognized, remove it, make sure all tape is off, wipe the contacts and reinstall it — see printer says ink cartridge not recognized, or contact us and we'll make it right.
