Refilling Your Own Ink Cartridges? Do This First So You Don't Clog the Printhead

Ink refill kits are one of the best ways to cut your printing costs, but they've also got a reputation, deserved honestly, for making a mess and occasionally leaving people with a worse clog than they started with. The good news is that almost every refill-related clog comes down to one of two mistakes, and both are easy to avoid.

SHORT ANSWER

Refill kits themselves rarely damage a printhead. The problem is overfilling (which pushes air bubbles or excess ink into the nozzles) and letting the fill hole sit open too long (which lets the ink dry and crust right where it can clog the print path). Fix your technique, and refilling is completely safe.

BEFORE YOU REFILL

• Print a test page first, so you have a baseline for what "good" looks like.
• Have your cleaning solution and a lint-free cloth ready - refilling is messy, and it's easier to wipe drips immediately than after they've dried.
• Check your cartridge type. Some are refilled through a top hole, others need the plug on the bottom removed - refilling the wrong spot is the single most common reason people flood the sponge inside and get streaky, oversaturated prints.

WHILE YOU REFILL

• Go slow, and stop the moment you feel resistance or see ink pooling at the fill hole - that means the cartridge is full, even if the kit's bottle isn't empty.
• Reseal the fill hole immediately with the plug or a small piece of tape if your kit doesn't include one. An open cartridge left overnight is a near-guaranteed clog.

AFTER YOU REFILL

• Let the cartridge sit upright for 10-15 minutes before installing, so any air bubbles introduced during filling can settle.
• Run one cleaning cycle before your first print - this clears the ink path of any air that made it to the nozzles.
