What Ink Does the Brother MFC-J6935DW Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The Brother MFC-J6935DW uses Brother LC3029 super-high-yield INKvestment cartridges: black (about 3,000 pages) plus cyan, magenta and yellow (about 1,500 pages each). Castle Ink sells a remanufactured LC3029 4-pack and singles: LC3029 Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow.
Two look-alikes catch people out. The near-identical MFC-J6930DW takes LC3017/LC3019, not LC3029, and the successor MFC-J6945DW takes LC3037/LC3039. Neither fits the J6935DW.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the MFC-J6935DW?
- Open the ink cartridge cover on the front right of the printer.
- Press the release lever above the empty cartridge and pull it out.
- Remove the orange protective cap from the new cartridge.

What MFC-J6935DW owners ask
These come from Brother's support FAQs and manual for this model, owner reviews at Best Buy and elsewhere, and expert reviews, answered in our words.
Why does it say "Cannot Detect" after I replace a cartridge?
Brother's own explanation is that the cartridge was installed too quickly for the printer to detect. Take it out and reinstall it slowly and firmly until it locks. Brother also notes non-Brother ink may not be detected; our LC3029 keep Brother's original shell.
It still says "Paper Jam" after I removed the paper. What now?
Brother lists this as a common question for the J6935DW. Usually a scrap of paper is still inside or the Jam Clear Cover at the back isn't closed evenly at both ends. Brother also points to paper dust on the pick-up rollers as a cause of repeat jams, so clean those too.
What does "Unable to Print XX" mean?
The manual says it's a mechanical problem or a foreign object such as a paper clip inside. Open the scanner cover, remove any scraps, then unplug the printer for several minutes. If you can't print received faxes, transfer them to a computer or another fax machine first.
Can it really copy and scan 11 x 17?
Yes. PCMag noted it's one of the few small-office inkjets that can print, copy, scan and fax at tabloid size, and gave it an Editors' Choice.
What's the difference between the J6935DW and J6930DW?
PCMag says the J6935DW adds the PCL5 printer language and a low-paper warning. The bigger practical difference is the ink: the J6935DW is an INKvestment model that takes LC3029, while the J6930DW takes LC3017/LC3019.
MFC-J6935DW quirks worth knowing
- Brother's error list includes "Ink Absorber Full," which means the internal waste-ink pad needs service.
- It's a big machine: Consumer Reports lists a set-up footprint of about 20 x 22 x 33 in. and a weight of about 52 lb.
- Best Buy owners rate it 4.8 stars, but across only 22 reviews.
- In Europe the same model takes LC3217/LC3219 cartridges; in the US it's LC3029.
