What Toner Does the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw Use?

Quick answer: The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw uses HP 130A toner: CF350A black (about 1,300 pages), CF351A cyan, CF352A yellow and CF353A magenta (about 1,000 pages each). It also has a separate imaging drum, the HP 126A (CE314A), rated at about 14,000 pages printing black only and about 7,000 printing color.

There is no high-yield 130X. "126A" is also the name of a CP1025 toner line, but only the CE314A drum fits this printer. Castle Ink sells compatible 130A in all four colors and the CE314A drum.

What Does M177fw Toner Cost per Page?

On October 27, 2026, Staples listed HP's 130A black at $86.99, 130A cyan at $89.99 and the CE314A drum at $129.99: about 6.7¢ a page for black and 9¢ per color, before the drum. Our compatible 130A cartridges are $47.95 each (about 3.7¢ a page for black and 4.8¢ per color), and our CE314A drum is $59.95. PCWorld called running costs high for this class of printer.

Will Compatible Toner Work?

Yes. We know of no cartridge lock on this model. The HP firmware updates that rejected third-party cartridges were reported on newer OfficeJet, OfficeJet Pro and PageWide printers, and this printer is older than that change. HP's warranty doesn't cover damage caused by non-HP supplies, but using them doesn't void it.

How Do I Replace the Toner in the M177fw?

  1. Use the control panel's toner option, which turns the carousel so the cartridge you need faces the top door.
  2. Open the top cover and lift the cartridge out by its handle.
  3. Unpack the new cartridge, rock it gently and remove the sealing tape and protective cover.
  4. Drop it into its color-coded slot, close the cover and let the printer finish turning the carousel.
  5. If the carousel won't move, HP's workaround is to power off, press the white carousel brake inside the cover and turn the carousel by hand.

Which Other Printers Use the HP 126A Drum?

The CE314A drum also fits the LaserJet Pro CP1025 and CP1025nw, the LaserJet Pro 100 Color MFP M175a and M175nw, the TopShot LaserJet Pro M275 and the Color LaserJet Pro MFP M176n.

What M177fw owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, manufacturer support communities and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Does the M177fw have a separate drum?

Yes. It uses the HP 126A imaging drum (CE314A). The four 130A toners turn on a carousel and print through it.

When do I replace the drum?

When the printer warns you, or when print quality drops. You don't replace it with every toner.

What does error 54.2 mean?

HP staff say it's a carousel rotation error, often from a cartridge that isn't seated right. Reseat all four cartridges in their color-coded slots and restart.

Is there a high-yield 130X?

No. HP makes 130A only.

M177fw quirks worth knowing

  • It prints, copies, scans and faxes, with a 35-sheet document feeder and a 3-inch touchscreen, but two-sided printing is manual.
  • PCWorld measured 9.9 pages a minute for text, against HP's 17.
