A warning about "universal" 42X cartridges
Search for 4250 toner and you will find remanufactured cartridges advertised as covering Q1338A, Q1339A, Q5942X and Q5945A in a single SKU. Those are aftermarket universal cartridges built around a shared physical body — they are not HP parts, and they are the reason search results and marketplace listings wrongly cross-list these cartridges as interchangeable.
To be clear about what HP actually supports: HP's own 4250/4350 user guide lists only Q5942A and Q5942X. The Q5945A (HP 45A) belongs to the LaserJet 4345 MFP family, not the 4250. If a listing claims one cartridge covers four printer families, understand that you are buying an aftermarket compromise rather than an HP-sanctioned equivalent.
How to replace the toner
- Open the top cover of the printer.
- Lift the used cartridge out by its handle. These are large, heavy cartridges — use both hands and keep it level.
- Unpack the new Q5942A or Q5942X and rock it gently front to back five or six times to distribute the toner.
- Bend and snap the tab at the end of the cartridge, then pull the sealing tape out in one steady motion.
- Align the cartridge with the guides and slide it in until it seats.
- Close the top cover and print a configuration page from the control panel to confirm.
Two failure modes to budget for
Both are well documented across the 4200/4250/4300/4350 platform, and neither is a toner problem:
- Swing plate / fuser drive assembly. The plastic drive gear that transfers power to the fuser strips its teeth, producing a loud grinding noise and eventually a stoppage. Metal-gear replacement kits are sold specifically for this — it is a known, fixable wear item rather than the end of the printer.
- Fuser failure. Also family-wide. Any used 4250 should be assumed to need a maintenance kit at some point; budget for it when pricing a secondhand unit. The 110V kit is Q5421A, shared with the 4350.
Other troubleshooting
- Faded print. Rock the cartridge to redistribute toner and confirm EconoMode is off in the driver.
- Repeating marks down the page. The drum is inside the cartridge, so a new cartridge resolves them.
- Jams and multi-feeds. Pickup and separation rollers wear out; they are inexpensive user-replaceable parts.
- Getting it onto a modern network. The 4250n, 4250tn and 4250dtn have built-in JetDirect Ethernet and work well with the standard PCL 5e, PCL 6 or PostScript drivers in Windows. A base 4250 with only parallel and USB is more awkward on current hardware.
- Cartridge not recognized. There is no cartridge-blocking firmware on this printer. Clean the chip contacts and reseat.

About the HP LaserJet 4250 itself
The 4250 is a monochrome workgroup laser printer — print only, no scanning or copying. It runs at 45 pages per minute on letter, prints at 1200 dpi, and was built for serious volume.
Duplexing depends on the variant: it is an accessory on the base 4250, the 4250n and the 4250tn, and standard on the 4250dtn, which also adds a second 500-sheet tray. My 4250 started grinding or knocking near the fuser. Do I need a new fuser?
Usually not, and it is not the toner. Technicians trace the noise to worn gears in the swing plate assembly that drives the fuser. They recommend replacing the whole assembly rather than just the gear you can see, which is about a 75-minute job.
What causes a 13.05 jam error?
Paper is stalling at the fuser entrance. On the HP forum the usual causes are worn fuser drive gears (swing plate RM1-0043), a broken blue fuser latch or worn fuser rollers.
Paper feeds double or the printer pulls blank sheets. Why?
The pickup solenoid can stick as its foam pad breaks down, and worn pickup and separation rollers cause misfeeds. Both are inexpensive fixes.
How much can a 4250 handle?
It is rated at up to 45 pages per minute, with a recommended maximum of 200,000 pages a month.
LaserJet 4250 quirks worth knowing
- With at least 128 MB of memory fitted, it prints PDF files (version 1.3) directly, without a computer converting them first.
- It has two EIO slots and CompactFlash slots, and takes an optional 20 GB EIO hard disk, which is why so many ended up in print rooms.
- Fully built out, it takes five trays and 3,100 sheets, with up to 800 sheets of output.
- MICR versions of the 42A and 42X are made for check printing. They are not the same as standard 42A/42X, so order the right one.
