Why Is My Scanner Not Working But My Printer Still Prints?

Illustration of an all-in-one printer scanning a document

Printing and scanning use different pathways on an all-in-one machine, so it's entirely possible for one to work perfectly while the other quietly stops responding. Here's how to track down the cause and fix it.

Reinstall the Scanner Software

Printing often uses a lightweight driver, while scanning needs a separate, fuller software suite. Reinstall the complete driver package from the manufacturer's site rather than the print-only driver Windows or macOS installs automatically.

Check Windows or Mac Scanner Permissions

Some operating systems block scanner access at the privacy or security settings level after an update. Confirm your computer allows the scanning app to use the imaging device. Apple's official guide to solving scanning problems on Mac walks through exactly where to check.

Restart the Print Spooler / Scanner Service

On Windows, restarting the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service often resolves a scanner that's stopped responding without needing a full reinstall.

Still Not Working?

If none of these fixes work, a hardware fault in the scan bar itself may be to blame, and that usually calls for a repair or replacement rather than a software fix. If the connection is the real issue rather than the scanner software, our USB and wireless connection guide covers that separately, and if printing itself has stopped too, start with our complete printer troubleshooting guide.

If It's Time to Replace It

A dead scan bar usually isn't worth repairing on an older all-in-one. For a reliable replacement with a proper flatbed scanner, the Epson EcoTank ET-2980 (check price on Amazon) is our everyday pick, covered in more depth in our best all-in-one printer guide.
